It makes them feel special and different. It gives them a feeling of being better than others, of having their eyes opened to a 'truth' that others don't see. That's why some call non-believers 'sheeple.' I think it's similar to the feeling we get whenever we learn an obscure yet interesting piece of trivia. The thought of "No one else knows it!"
I also think conspiracies appeal to the way humans think, especially now. A desire to search for patterns. There has to be reason and purpose for anything.
But this is not right!
I still blame the lack of the fundamental research skills that needs to be taught in school.
I believe you get to have a full subject on your 4th year, but investigative skills and fact checking should be honed at a young age.
