Oppurtunity 2.0 program to empower out-of-school youth in Legazpi City

LEGAZPI CITY, October 8 (PIA) -- Some 180,000 out-of-school youth (OSY) across 12 sites in the country, including Legazpi City, will benefit from the Oppurtunity 2.0 program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The recently launched Oppurtunity 2.0: Second-Chance Oppurtunities for Out-of-School Youth program aims to support the education, employment and livelihood needs of out-of-school youth in Legazpi City. It will be implemented for five years with Php 1.9 billion ($35.5 million) total budget.

The program will work with the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and local government units (LGUs) to support their programs and to provide relevant education, employability skills, and work experience to the OSYs across the Philippines.

“A key element in this journey of youth transformation is partnership. Alliances that consist of committed and capable individuals and institutions who selflessly put in their time, effort, and resources to advance our shared goal has to be a central feature in improving the lives of youth,” said Thomas LeBlanc, USAID Philippines Director of Education.

USAID will work with Legazpi City and other 11 LGUs in the country to set up Youth Development Alliances that mobilize resources to help their OSYs.

“We in the city government really believe that, to put Legazpi to greater heights, nobody should be left behind,” said Mayor Noel Rosal.

“We know for a fact that the LGU should really give their counterpart. Today, as we gather in this meeting, may this serve as inspiration to the youth and community that we are doing inclusive growth in the city,” he added.

Albay Governor Al Bichara and Congressman Joey Salceda also expressed their support for the program.

“I pledge my humble support for this program, to the best of my capacity, by way of legislations or in other ways so that we may be able to strengthen the capacity and capabilities of our youth not only to preserve our past but also to create a better future for our next generations,” Salceda said.

Opportunity 2.0 is implemented by US-based Education Development Center, with partners Accenture, Philippine Business for Education, Catholic Relief Services, Voluntary Services Overseas, and SEAMEO INNOTECH. (SAA/EDC-PIA5/Albay)

How To Make A Country Worship You

Why are Filipinos known for their lack of reading comprehension?

Because according to most of them: "Well-mannered is better than well-educated" That's why most of the Filipinos never progress. It is because of the trash mindset.
