CAGAYAN DE ORO, Oct. 4 (PIA) – In celebration of the 23rd consumer welfare month this October, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – 10 is going to hold its lined up activities and campaigns virtually amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID – 19) pandemic, rallying both the consumers and sellers in Northern Mindanao to practice responsible commerce and production practices.
Through its Consumer Protection Group (CPG), the yearly celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month underscores the importance of consumer rights in the entrepreneurial integrity and economic growth as anchored on this year's theme, "Sustainable Consumer in the new normal."
Sustainable Consumerism in the New Normal
Due to the strict implementation of Health Safety Protocols and Stay-At-Home directives from the National Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases (NIATF-EID) to mitigate the rapid spread of the virus, buyer and sellers alike have adapted to the new consumer landscape, mostly shifting to digitalization in their business activities which brought about new norms for the buying public.
“We have to be smart consumers. Just because we are shifting digitally in this new normal does not mean that we shouldn’t be responsible. As a consumer, we have consumer rights and responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is to be aware of what sustainability is,” DTI-10 Information Officer Ms. Julie A. Nieva shared.
She emphasized that a shopper has the capacity to become a sustainable consumer through critical awareness and educating one's self on the the products being sold on line and their effects on the community and environment.
In addition to education and awareness, Ms. Nieva also underscored the importance of solidarity in the advocacy for sustainable consumerism by inviting the buyers to join consumer groups to learn more about their rights. “As a group, we are stronger compared to being alone, so we can truly push for our consumer rights," she said.

The month-long celebration kicked off with a nationwide “Consumer Well Fair Zumba” last Oct. 1, which was followed by various virtual activities in the coming weeks such as quiz bees, provincial E-comics contests for college students, webinars on sustainable lifestyles, and more to increase the public’s awareness on their rights, and encourage the masses to practice of sustainable consumption.
“As we celebrate consumer welfare month, I think, despite the pandemic, we still assert and know our rights and responsibilities,” Ms. Nieva stressed.
