DepEd-Camiguin taps LGUs, partners to handle 23,944 enrollees

CAMIGUIN, Oct. 7 (PIA)--Recording 23,944 enrollees for SY 2020-2021 or 93.03 percent of target enrollees in public elementary schools,  the Department of Education (DepEd)-Division of Camiguin urges local government units (LGUs), parents, volunteers and private organizations to aid in the implementation of modular and distance learning.

In delivering the modules, Schools Division Superintendent Edgardo Abanil said they coordinated with the LGUs so parents could easily get or submit the modules through the dropoff points aside from the existing dropoff points in schools where the parents, in small batches, could get the modules from the teachers. 

"Ang mga munisipyo naa'y gihatag nga volunteers nga mu-abag pud sa pag-distribute sa modules (The towns here provided volunteers who can also help in the distribution of the modules)," Abanil added.

Curriculum Implementation Division Chief Emelia Aclan further added that parents and learners could also communicate with their teachers through call or text if they encounter difficulties with understanding the modules.

"Para masiguro nga nakasabot ang mga bata sa modules, na'y i-conduct ang mga magtutudlo nga assessment. I-orient sila next week sa pag-assess sa knowledge sa pagsabot sa mga bata," Aclan added.

(To ensure that the students have understood the modules, the teachers will conduct assessments. They will be oriented next week on how they will assess the knowledge gained by the children)

Aside from the modules, DepEd-Camiguin also sought help from Island Cable TV Corp. in airing television-based lessons. The said television station currently provides three channels for DepEd to air their video lessons. 

Aclan said there are answer sheets to be provided and completed through the dropoff points for those who will utilize the TV-based instruction.

As for the parents, Abanil said they should strengthen their roles so they can properly guide their children in answering the modules and they should refrain from doing the modules themselves. 

In terms of usage of the Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), School Governance and Operations Division Chief Lailane Lopena said they have realigned some expenses in their MOOE noting that there will be activities that will no longer apply in the new normal such as the conduct of summer reading camps, sports training, and other regional activities that will require meals and transportation expenses. 

Teachers also have communcation allowance worth P1,000 to easily reach out to parents and learners in providing guidance on modular learning. They can also freely use the schools’ internet connectivity to further help learners and parents.

There are 25,719 total enrollees for both private and public schools in Camiguin for SY 2020-2021, Abanil said. About 23,944 have enrolled in public schools while there are 1,775 enrollees in private schools. 

They have noted that change of residence, work displacement, and having doubts on the new modes of learning are among the reasons why some students did not enroll in the current school year. (RTP/PIA10)
