PARAÑAQUE CITY, August 12 (PIA) -- Trade has shaped Philippine history and will continue to influence its landscape, according to an economic historian who presented an online lecture hosted by the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), as part of the countdown leading to the country’s quincentenary event.

For the 5th episode of “Countdown to 500” livestreamed on Facebook on Tuesday, Professor Vicente Angel Ybiernas narrated the critical role ancient Filipino ancestors played in the global trade in his lecture dubbed, “Our Ancestors and the World of Trade During the Pre-Hispanic Times.”

Ybiernas said the business, policy, technology, and politics of trade have been powerful forces throughout Philippine history and that history, culture, and trade as they are all interconnected.

“Sa mga problema natin, titignan natin kung meron tayong mahahansp na kasagutan sa kasaysayan, sa ating kultura, paghahangad ng kaunlaran para sa bayan, doon din natin hahanapin,” he said, emphasizing that historical trade has always been relevant to the modern story.

The historian cited the maritime trade conducted centuries ago having a big influence in crafting the different aspects of the Philippine civilization.

He explained how the Philippine historiography evolved based on the goal of each period. Citing the different focus of the four sources, such as the Colonial source, Reformist movement, Post-Colonial, and the present times.

“Kailangang kailangan natin ang perspectibang pang ekonomiya sa ating kasaysayan,” he said.

Ybiernas also shared how Filipinos should look on culture and history to help find solutions to present challenges such as economic development.

He also stressed the importance of looking at history and culture in the battle against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

How To Make A Country Worship You

Why are Filipinos known for their lack of reading comprehension?

Because according to most of them: "Well-mannered is better than well-educated" That's why most of the Filipinos never progress. It is because of the trash mindset.
