CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Aug. 12 (PIA) -- The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) together with the Department of Health (DOH) has spearheaded this year's National Family Planning Month with the theme, “Mag-FP alang sa usa ka luwas, himsog ug maalamon nga pamilya (Practice FP for safe, strong and wise family).”
Despite the pandemic brought about by coronavirus disease (COVID-19), POPCOM-10 and DOH-10 continue their services by guiding the Filipinos in terms of family planning services.
During this time of pandemic, the POPCOM expects an additional 10,000 unplanned pregnancy due to COVID-19.
POPCOM Regional Director Jeremias Gupit said, "we know that we are in a difficult time. First and foremost due to COVID-19, there is a projection made by UPPI (University of the Philippines Population Institute) that on top of the 83,000 unplanned pregnancy for this year, there will be an additional of 10,000 unplanned pregnancy because of COVID-19.”
As the agency celebrates the Family Planning Month, Director Gupit clarified that the government does not control the population but rather manage it in relation to the country’s development and resources.
“We must correct the mindset of the people. Our government does not control the population; we are not into controlling our population since our population or people is the number one asset in any community. What we are doing is to manage the population in the sense that the strength of the population is in line with the strength of the development for example the volume of food and availability and readiness of jobs,” Gupit explained.
“We at the commission have a saying that “Iwas COVID Iwas sa Di Planadong Pagbuntis” since during this present time, economy is low and sustaining a livelihood may be difficult. Couples should plan their number of children or members of the family through the use modern family planning method,” Gupit concluded. (JAKAraña/PIA10)
