Vizcaya dads push IP rep in provincial board

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, July 17 (PIA) - Lawmakers here are now wrapping up issues and concerns on a proposed ordinance allowing a representative of the Indigenous People to sit as one of their fellow board members.

Board Member Flodemonte Gerdan said he has authored the measure entitled 'An Ordinance Providing Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representation (IPMR)' in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP).

The Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Board is set to wrap --up discussions on the proposed Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Represention Ordinance. The measure, once approved will promote IP welfare and development in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan(SP) that will cascade in IP communities.# Photo from BM Gerdan's FB Post

"We are in the process of discussing the concept of the proposed ordinance in consultation with concerned agencies and authorities, among others so that we can implement this the soonest possible time," he said.

Gerdan said the proposed ordinance, now on its third and final reading is also being assisted by Board Member Elma PInao-an Lejao, committee chair on Indigenous People and co-authored by the other SP members.

He said that once the ordinance will be fully implemented, the IPs in the province will have its representative in the provincial board.

"Our fellow IP will soon have their voices heard in the SP through their IPMR. The IP representative help in the discussion and resolution of issues and concerns pertaining to IPs in our province," Gerdan added.

He further said that the representation of the IPs will also promote harmony, cooperation, camaraderie and peace among the ethnic tribes in the province.

The IPMR is also seen to boost multi-sectoral efforts towards the preservation of indigenous cultural and traditional practices.

The IPMR in the municipal and provincial legislative branches is required through the Indigenous People's Rights Act (IPRA).

It is being pushed, supervised and assisted by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP). (MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
