DOST-MIRDC produces 200k face shields for donation to medical frontliners nationwide

Sample of Face Shields for Distribution to Regions

QUEZON CITY, July 9 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology - Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) targets to produce 200,000 pieces of face shields to support health care workers and frontliners in various sectors who are continually battling  COVID-19 in the country.

DOST-MIRDC Executive Director,  Engr. Robert O. Dizon said that the Center supports the need of  frontliners for personal protective equipment particularly face shields, thus they started its mass production in May 15.

The project was funded by the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD)

The  DOST-MIRDC was using 3D printing to make 50 pieces of face shields a day through the 3D printing technologies housed in the Additive Manufacturing Center (AMCen)  when they saw the need to continually help the frontliners and mass produce the face shield. To be able to do this,  the Center shifted to plastic injection technology and ramped up production by up to 5,000 pieces of face shield frames per day.

The project was also carried out through the cooperation of Omnifab Inc. and Magasamsotite, the center’s partners. Omnifab Inc., is a 3D printing company that created the first mold’ while Megasamsotite, located at San Pedro Laguna, offered facilities for mass production.

The other mold for the face shield frames was created at the Die and Mold Solution Center (DMSC), a facility of the DOST-MIRDC.

DOST-MIRDC said that the distribution of face shields in different regions of the country will be coursed through the DOST Regional Office or directly to DOST Provincial Offices in coordination with local offices of the Department of Health (DOH), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine National Police (PNP) and other medical frontliners.

“We sent a letter to Usec. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, to inform all DOST regional and provincial offices about our project. All of them quickly responded and sent us their list of possible recipients. We fabricated additional molds to meet the required volume,” says Ms. Lina B. Afable, project leader and Chief of the Technology Diffusion Division of the DOST-MIRDC.

“Since we began the project on May 15, 2020, we have already donated a total of 105,000 pieces of face shields: 10,000 each to CAR, Regions I, II, III, IVB, V, VI, VIII, and XII; and 15,000 pieces of face shields to Region IVA,” said Ms. Afable.

DOST-MIRDC project team, assures to stays on top of production and to attain target project completion date on August 14, 2020.

In addition, the Center is also accommodating additional inquires for face shields on top of the scheduled donations to the regions. (JLB/ PIA-IDPD)

How To Make A Country Worship You

Isang Pasasalamat

Sabi nila: “There’s always something to be thankful for.” Kaya ako din may sasabihin! 🤣✌️ Isang pasasalamat!

15 Things That Make You a Baguio Person

Here are random instances that might make you feel the feels: Despite the fact that everyone gets enthusiastic about strawberries, you go, "Like, duh! We have a whole farm of those!" you roll your eyes and add everything else is strawberry-tized -- from jams to wines to taho!  You recognize how fresh vegetables really looks, smells and tastes like, and as Sayote may cost a fortune in other areas, in Baguio, you can ask from your neighbour’s backyard or you're lucky if the vines has branched out over your side already.  You secretly know the lyrics to country music when it is played on the radio, more so you sing along every time the Magic 99.9 jingle is on. Leather jackets are for cowboys, denim jackets are what you take when you go swimming and those killer boots? those are made for Baguio walking.  Midland is where you check out what’s in, hot and not in the city including obituaries.  Dainty, Star Café or Luisa’s is where the oldies meet up for
