CALOCOAN CITY, June 12 (PIA) -- The Department of Transportation (DOTr) today announced that the contruction of "safe" bicycle lanes along EDSA will start on June 13.
In a social media post, the DOTr said Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade has already sealed an agreement with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairperson Danny Lim to expedite the construction of the "joint project" bicycle lanes.
“Our goal is to move people while making sure of their safety,” Tugade said, as the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases encouraged the use of bicycles as the primary mode of transport during the "new normal."
He said the planned bike lanes will be put up on the existing lanes on EDSA and not on sidewalks.
To recall, the MMDA earlier proposed for the construction of bike lanes in its plan to incorporate bicycles into EDSA as part of the agency’s program to reorganize the capital region’s major thoroughfare.
This move by goverment has been seen to also prioritize the welfare of active and public transport users, as well as that of private motor vehicles along EDSA. (PIA NCR)
