SAN JOSE, Antique, June 12 (PIA) - - The frontline workers of the COVID-19 pandemic were lauded as modern day heroes for their hard work and dedication as the country is facing the war against the unseen enemy, the corona virus.

“It is a timely occasion to convey our appreciation to our frontliners, our modern day heroes, for their unselfish service especially in this difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic,” said Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao during the 122nd Independence Day celebration at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom, Park here.
She also cited the Overseas Filipino Workers as modern day heroes as well and the Antiqueños in general for the upholding the Bayanihan spirit that during the time of pandemic have helped the frontline workers and those who are in need.
"The 'Bayanihan' spirit is very important for us Filipinos. Let us remember that what we have now is not a war against anyone but the unseen enemy," she emphasized.
Cadiao also stressedthat the nation can’t be safe, when there is still COVID-19.
The Governor also told the Antiqueños that this occasion should be the time to remember the struggles of our forebears who sacrificed and fought with bravery, thus, they should be honored and valued.
The program also featured a song number from the composer of the theme song of the centennial celebration of the Philippine Independence Day in 1998, former Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Dante Beriong.
Instead of singing his composition "Mabuhay ka Pilipino, " he rendered the song entry of another Antiqueño composer Katz Amerila entitled "Himig Kalayaan" written by Fr. Mark Matillano.
During the program, employees of the Provincial Government and national government agencies have gathered at the park for the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony at the statue of Dr. Jose Rizal and Evelio B. Javier.
The theme of this year’s Independence Day Celebration is "Kalayaan 2020: Towards a Free, United, and Safe Nation." (JBG/psm/PIA-Antique)
