PASIG CITY, June 16 (PIA) -- The Commission on Population and Development National Capital Region (POPCOM-NCR) has cited key facts on the demographic vulnerabilities of Metro Manila on COVID-19 transmission.
The demographic vulnerabilities released by POPCOM aims to provide additional data/information and technical guidance for national and local government agencies by using demographic factors, such as population size, spatial distribution or density and age-sex compositions as emerging variables in aid of planning, implementing and monitoring targeted interventions by LGUs to their constituents amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This, amid Metro Manila recording the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
While physical or social distancing is encouraged by the authorities in this time of public health emergency, there are around 812,584 houses in Metro Manila that are under 20 square meters, according to POPCOM NCR.
Based on this figure, around 3.785 million Filipinos live in houses that are under 20 square meters or about 27.2 percent of NCR’s 13.867 million population live in such houses.
As elderlies are among the vulnerable in contracting the virus, there are around 145,526 senior citizens (60 years and older) who are living with other household members in houses that are even less than 20 meters. And sadly, there are also around 38,714 senior citizens in NCR who are living alone.
The threat of COVID-19 is still very much present and authorities continuously remind the public to stay home and practice safety and health protocols to prevent the spread of the virus. (PIA-NCR)
