ILOILO CITY, June 9 (PIA6) -- The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) in Western Visayas has encouraged all local government units in the region to support the agency’s demographic vulnerability tool in planning for pandemic responses.
In a virtual briefing to regional line agencies, POPCOM-6 regional director Harold Alfred Marshall said they are pushing for a resolution that would enjoin all LGUs to support POPCOM’s Assessing Demographic Vulnerabilities of Communities to COVID-19 Infection through data sharing as a tool to monitor the progress in flattening the curve in the region.
“POPCOM has been mandated to look into the vulnerabilities of our communities into this COVID-19,”he said.
Marshall said that during pandemics, geographic spread is a vital factor in identifying the most effective health interventions to mitigate disease outcomes.
“Demographic vulnerability pertains to the demographic characteristics of population that may cause or enhance the exposure or possibility of individuals and segment of population to be infected with communicable disease,” he said.
He said spatial characteristics such as population distribution, density and living arrangement of the population are important in assessing geographic spread of the disease.
Marshall added that through key population indicators, local government units can effectively plan for pandemic response. (JSC/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
