TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, June 12 (PIA) - - The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) region 2 has spearheaded the virtual commemoration of the 122nd Philippine Independence Day today with the theme Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan at Ligtas.
The virtual celebration was done online via the Facebook pages of the said agency and hooked-up by local media practitioners regionwide.
This year's celebration was focused on the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that has been affecting the health and the living status of the people and the economy of the country.
Angely L. Mercado, PIA-2 Officer-In-Charge, said the Independence Day reminds the Filipino people to be binded, to be strong and to be in one accord during this pandemic.
"This historic commemoration should not end with a mere celebration of flag raising, pagpupugay sa watatwat, among other activities but it should be celebrated everyday among us," Mercado said.

Civil Defense Regional Director and chair of the Cagayan Valley-Regional Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease Dante D. Balao said after 122 years of achieving the freedom and to be an independent country, the nation is suffering from a dreaded pandemic, an unseen enemy.
"I can tell you with much confidence how I feel about the amount of cooperation from all sectors of society and the local government units to stop this dreaded Corona Virus. I am proud of all of you and to this, I render my salute," Balao, who was this year's guest of speaker in the Independence Day virtual celebration, said
On his part, 3rd district representative Joseph L. Lara said the commemoration should be taken as an opportunity to be inspired as a nation to heal as one and regain the freedom against the pandemic.
"We face several challenges in our lives and we have been wanting to be freed from poverty and to take opportunities to improve our lives. That is why I have prioritized programs and projects that will help alleviate poverty, " Lara said.
Mayor Jefferson Soriano of Tuguegarao City, on the other hand, expressed his gratitude to the frontliners who have selflessly devoted their lives this COVID-19 pandemic.
Soriano further appealed to the public to adhere to the guidelines and protocols laid by the national and local governments to contain the spread of the virus. (ALM/OTB/PIA-2))
