Manila bishop calls for young volunteers to help in church services amid pandemic

PASIG CITY, June 14 – Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila, Bishop Broderick Pabillo called on younger volunteers to help with religious services in anticipation for the gradual reopening of churches. 

“We need more volunteers now since there are new ministries to be created or strengthened because of our situation. We will have to bring communion to the sick and to the elderly near their homes. We will need people to help keep the proper physical distancing and to regularly disinfect our churches” said Bishop Pabillo in a statement.

The Church has discouraged elders and susceptible adults from attending Mass as a temporary measure to avoid exposure to COVID-19.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier also asked parishes to train younger lay ministers of communion.

“So, we sorely need younger volunteers. I would appeal to our elderly parish volunteers that if you truly love your parish, you will recruit one or two young volunteers to take your place in the church,” Pabillo expressed.

Bishop Pabillo added that a vital service that the elderly can still do in their homes is prayer citing that is not only important, but indispensable in the Church.

“Please accompany the church activities with your prayers and spiritual, and even material, offerings. You may be our prayer intercessors at this time of crisis.”  

Meanwhile, Bishop Pabillo expressed hope for the gradual opening of church services as Metro Manila remains under the general community quarantine (GCQ) status. The prelate cited that church services are essential services to the people. (CBCP News/PIA-NCR)

Pagbati sa mga itinalagang board members ng Angat Buhay na magsisilbing gabay at haligi ng organisasyon! Magsisilbing Chairperson ng Angat Buhay NGO si Atty. Leni Robredo; habang tatayo namang bilang President si Philip Francisco Dy. Si Raphael Martin Magno naman ang tatayong Executive Director ng organisasyon.
