ILOILO CITY, June 12 (PIA6) -- In line with the commemoration of the 122nd anniversary of Philippine Independence, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. called on the Ilonggos to unite in the fight against the pandemic due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
“We don’t only heal as one but we fight as one because we are fighting for independence from an enemy that we cannot see,” he said during a press conference.
Defensor said that the country gained independence because the people united and fought against the oppressors from other lands.
“Right now, we are fighting again,” he said, adding that this time, it is even more fatal than a foreign invasion in terms of casualty and the levels of problems and difficulties it gave.
The governor said that as Ilonggos celebrate Independence Day this year, the people should work together for the recovery of the province.
“As we celebrate Independence Day, let us unite and fight as one in combatting this until the end and win against COVID-19,” he added.
This year’s commemoration of the Independence Day is anchored on the theme, “Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas (Kalayaan 2020: Towards a Free, United, and Safe Nation)." (JBG/LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
