ILOILO CITY, June 9 (PIA) - - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 6 has disbursed a total of P995,277,000.00 in social pension to poor senior citizens in Western Visayas.
In a virtual presser on June 8, DSWD 6 reported that as of 12 noon of June 8 a total 331,759 indigent senior citizens have received their stipend of P3,000 for the 1st semester of the year.
Each qualified indigent senior citizen gets a stipend of P500 every month to help augment their daily subsistence and other medical needs under the social pension program, one of the regular programs of DSWD embodied in Republic Act No. 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.
DSWD found ways to release the first semester social pension of beneficiaries, being one of the vulnerable sectors in this time of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
The effort was greatly appreciated by the members of the Municipal Council of Kalibo in Aklan province.
Through Resolution No. 2020-354, the municipal council expressed its thanks to DSWD through Director Evelyn Macapobre of DSWD 6 for the approval and release of of the January to June 2020 senior citizen social pension benefit.
“DSWD has already started distributing the six months' worth of social pension for indigent senior citizens for this year that could help them sustain their needs amid COVID-19 crisis,” the resolution said, which was presented during the virtual presser.
Macapobre also thanked the Kalibo Municipal Council for the resolution which she said is an inspiring message for all of them to keep going.
Likewise, she acknowledged all the LGUs in the region for their involvement and support in the implementation of the government’s Social Amelioration Program benefiting a total of 1,130,589 low income families in the region as of June 8, 2020. (JSC/laf/PIA6-Iloilo)
