DUMAGUETE CITY, June 10 (PIA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) Negros Oriental Division embarked on an initiative called “Project 2Big” which underscores the importance of water in health and sanitation of school children.
DepEd-Negros Oriental Division Superintendent Dr. Senen Paulin announced this in a PIA-IATF-EID “Straight from the Source” Press Briefing held June 9 at the media briefing area of the Perdices Coliseum, this city.
Paulin explained that the project is part of the Brigada Eskwela this year which is reconfigured towards strengthening the linkage between schools, community stakeholders, and other agencies to ensure a protective learning environment for school children in case they have to go to school when the school year officially starts.
A report from DepEd’s official website said the actual cleaning and repainting of classrooms and repair of damaged fixtures and school facilities that are the regular activities during the Brigada period will be put on hold in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schools are instead directed to strengthen their partnership engagement to ensure that the delivery of basic education services will remain unhampered despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
The report added that stakeholders can still participate in the preparations for the opening of classes under the new normal by donating “thermal scanners; hand sanitizing equipment or materials; and printing of COVID-19 and sanitation/proper hand washing hygiene information materials to aid BE and OBE in introducing protection and health protocols to learners and teachers.”
However, DepEd here is encouraging its community partners to donate water tumblers for their “Project 2Big.”
Paulin said they want to insitutionalize regular drinking of water to their students to impart to them the importance of hydration and part of their measures to keep school children healthy.
“We are instituting in our division kanang dungan na pagpanginom ug tubig sa mga bata (as) part of the protective measures. We would appreciate if tumbler gyud ang mahatag. At (any) time of the day kung naa ang mga bata sa eskwelahan unya nag face-to-face, naa sila schedule that they will drink water. Maayo na hydrated ang mga bata as part of the protection (We are instituting in our division the simultaneous drinking of water as part of the protective measures. We would appreciate if donors would give tumblers. At any time of the day, in case students are in school for a face-to-face session, we will set a time where they will drink water altogether. It is important to keep them hydrated as part of the protective measures),” Paulin explained.
Hand-washing facilities will also be set up in schools for students to regularly practice handwashing as part of the protective measures against COVID-19.
“Gi-ensure pod namo dungan ug panghugas ug kamot ang mga bata before sila mangaon (We also ensure that students would wash hands before they eat),” Paulin noted.
Although the DepEd official cited the possibility of having a face-to-face interaction when the academic year is in full swing, he clarified that this is only the department’s last resort since it is considering every alternative mode of learning available to protect the learners and minimize contact.
Currently, DepEd here is undertaking a remote enrolment scheme and administering learner enrolment surveys in households under their coverage to gather key data on their learners and to determine which mode of learning is suitable for them under the new normal. (ral/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
