Davao del Sur public schools to employ blended learning modality

DAVAO CITY, June 19 (PIA) – The public schools in Davao del Sur province will be employing the blended learning modality, specifically adopting the combination of the modular distance learning (MDL) and face-to-face.

This is based on the result of the learners’ enrollment survey which identified the province to have no capacity for online learning due to slow internet connection, bared Dr. Nelson C. Lopez, schools division superintendent of the Department of Education of Davao del Sur.

“The province is not yet ready for online learning. We need strong connectivity,” Lopez clarified as he responded to a media query on the province’s readiness for online teaching and learning during yesterday’s live virtual presser of PIA (Philippine Information Agency) Davao del Sur Facebook page.

He said that the survey result revealed that it is appropriate for the province to utilize the combination of modular distance learning and face-to-face as the new normal learning approach to undertake when classes for school year 2020-2021 will begin on August 24, 2020.

However, Lopez assured that the face-to-face will only be allowed depending on the situation of the province relative to COVID-19 cases and if the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) will recommend for the resumption of the physical presence in schools.

As to the MDL, he said that modules are being prepared per grade level and per learning area, which are made interactive and self-explanatory, and he added that textbooks will also be used.

He also assured the parents that they will not be asked to pay for the reproduction of module materials based on DepEd’s no collection policy.

Lopez said that each school is allocated of the budget for the reproduction of modules and that DepEd Central Office has the budget for this new normal.

He added that they also need to realign budget from activities that will no longer be implemented in this time of the pandemic such as the face-to-face trainings for teachers, sports activities and other non-relevant activities.

The realigned allocation will now be prioritized for the procurement of reproduction and duplicating machines for each district office.

For learners who need assistance on the modular learning, especially those with working parents and have no capacity to supervise their children, the teachers will conduct home visits and make follow-ups through mobile phones.

Lopez assured that the home visits will ensure to uphold the health protocols such as wearing of face masks, observe hygiene and physical distancing.

“The parents and guardians will really have to partner and cooperate with DepEd. We appeal for their support to assist their children in using the modules,” he urged.

He said that as a requirement for the DepEd divisions, the blended learning modality for Davao del Sur has been integrated in the Learning Continuity Plan which is contextualized to the present provincial situation and that the delivery of instructions is based on the situation of the learners.

Also part of the learning continuity plan is the needed training for family members and other stakeholders in the community to serve as para-teachers.

The DepEd provincial official mentioned that the private schools in the province are also required to submit the Learning Continuity Plan for their chosen learning delivery modalities.

But as of now, Lopez said that they don’t have sufficient information on the status of the learning modalities and enrollment of the private schools. (PIA-XI/Carina L. Cayon)

Isang Pasasalamat

Sabi nila: “There’s always something to be thankful for.” Kaya ako din may sasabihin! 🤣✌️ Isang pasasalamat!
