PEÑARRUBIA, Abra, June 8(PIA) --As sunglasses and hats once started out as items meant to simply protect the wearer from the sun, face mask has also evolved now into a fashion accessory due to the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
Wearing of facemask is a must when going out of public places as a preventive measure against COVID-19. With no vaccine or medicine yet in sight, face masks would be essential part of the new normal.
Many want to incorporate and match facemask in their outfits, and this is opening an opportunity for entrepreneurs.
In the province, the Namarabar Indigo Natural Dye Producers Cooperative (NINDPC) is designing masks with many options to choose from. The group is creating various face mask designs that promote Cordilleran culture and identity.
Cooperative Head Mr. Luis Agaid Jr. said that the NINDPC as part of Philippine Textiles Research Institute is focusing on fashion creativity to value culture and tradition. Utilizing the traditional Natural Organic Dyeing, the fabrics of these fancy face masks are built to last long.
“Malatayun” is the local name of the indigo plant in Namarabar which can produce various shades of color blue, including purple, which was traditionally used to dye threads for weaving and fabrics.
More than that, the cooperative is also incorporating the different embroideries of Tigguian culture which form part of the face mask’s overall design. These embroideries depict various cultural beliefs, customs and traditions.
“We have already accepted orders of face masks as far as Manila, Baguio and the neighboring provinces and we ship the through available courier services from Abra, ” he said adding they can be reached through mobile number 0935 540 8089 for orders.
Despite Covid-19 pandemic, there have been many opportunities not just to scale up the level of cooperative’s’productivity and product quality, but also opportunities to promote culture and tradition which inspire us to stay resilient in these trying times, he added.
Whether it’s the design you choose or the way you fasten your mask to your face, you have an opportunity to make a statement with the mask you wear and protect yourself and other people in stylish manner. (JDP/CAGT – PIA CAR, Abra)
