ILOILO CITY, June 16 (PIA) – Four barangays in the local government unit of Pavia, Iloilo were selected as pilot areas in the municipality for the “Gulayan sa Barangay” project under the Department of Agriculture (DA)-6.
In a media release, DA-6 through the Office of Sangguniang Bayan Member Daniel Fajardo, recently turned over vegetable seeds and garden tools to the four barangays namely Purok 2, Cabugao Norte, Mali-ao, and Pal-agon.
Fajardo said that establishing vegetable gardens in the communities is essential to increase food production for daily consumption and as a source of livelihood.
“If this initiative becomes successful, we will replicate this to the other barangays in the municipality,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jonifer Frades, DA-High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) focal person, said each barangay received assorted seeds, plastic barrels, water sprinklers, spades, and rakes, as part of the intervention from DA.
“In two months, the residents can already harvest fresh vegetables from their community gardens,” he said.
The “Gulayan sa Barangay” project is under the department’s high value crops development program.
Meanwhile, the Plant Plant Plant Program is the umbrella program of DA in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure food availability, accessibility, and sustainability in the communities.
The program embraces the whole-of-nation approach as advocated by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to increase the country’s food adequacy level during the emergency situation due to the pandemic.(LTP/DA-6/PIA-Iloilo)
