Footloose Movie Trailer

Writer/Director Craig Brewer ("Hustle & Flow," "Black Snake Moan") delivers a new take of the beloved 1984 classic film, "Footloose." Ren MacCormack (played by newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers after a night out and Bomont's local councilmen and the beloved Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) responded by implementing ordinances that prohibit loud music and dancing. Not one to bow to the status quo, Ren challenges the ban, revitalizing the town and falling in love with the minister's troubled daughter Ariel (Julianne Hough) in the process. Luchi Cruz-Valdes reports on impending water shortage on Dokyu5's "Huling Patak"

An archipelago, the Philippines is surrounded by bodies of water. Yet, by 2025, experts predict a severe water shortage in the country. The rapid increase in population, urbanization and industrialization has reduced the quantity and affected the quality of Philippine waters.   "Today, the signs of the imminent crisis are palpable. Access to clean and adequate water is an acute seasonable problem in urban and coastal areas. Only 36% of the country's river systems are classified as sources of public water supply; up to 58% of groundwater sampled by government agents is contaminated with coliform and needs treatment; and 31% of diseases monitored over a five-year period are due to water-borne sources.   " Huling Patak , a one-hour documentary to be aired nationwide on TV5 and Aksyon TV Channel 41, presents the state of water resources in the Philippines and the looming crisis.   "Based on the compelling stories of six localities—Tawi Tawi, Davao, Camarines Sur, Quezon,

Self-service is Smart

We have become a society accustomed to self-service. We pay our bills using our mobile phones, online or via automated teller machines, get our coffee and snacks from vending machines, purchase tickets from airline sites, breeze through toll booths using an electronic toll collection system, choose and get our food ourselves at fastfood outlets, browse wap sites to buy tickets and seats for a movie, among others. Self-service is fast, convenient to customers since it gives them control over the transaction and cost-efficient.  It is a customer expectation in industries like telecommunications where service providers have massive clientele primed to access service channels online and via mobile, as well as the technology and the resources to deploy alternative touchpoints of communication with customers. This is evident in Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) which serves 47.8 million subscribers as of end June 2011. Consumer data reveals that for the first half of 2011, 73 percent of tot

Smart enhances postpaid lineup with “All-in” plans

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) the Philippines’ undisputed leader in wireless services announced today the availability of the new Smart All-In postpaid plans. Touted as the “ultimate in consumable”, All-in allows Smart postpaid subscribers to use their subscription packages as they please. “While the competition’s ‘add-on’ postpaid plan stack one service on top of the other like building blocks, Smart’s All-in plans lets you ‘add-in’ services as if you’re filling a box,” said Smart Mobile Marketing Head Guido Zaballero. “Simply sign up for the services whenever you want and package your plan the way you want it—it’s that flexible,” added Zaballero. Available all-inservices include the popular UnliTalk, UnliText, and UnliSurf packages as well as consumable browsing, and BlackBerry packages that include email, instant messaging, and social networks, and browsing for BlackBerry users. To avail of a package, simply text the appropriate keyword to 7577 (e.g. “Talk” send to 7577). Anoth

Smart helps spur growth of Filipino Facebook community

Facebook continues to be the favorite online destination of Filipinos as the latest numbers from show that there are now more than 25.5 million Pinoys in the popular social networking site. CheckFacebook pegs the number at 25,535,120—roughly a million more users compared to just 3 months ago—officially making Filipinos the 7th most populous group on Facebook comprising 3.4% of the 750 million worldwide user base. Earlier this year a study by ComScore revealed that the Philippines is the social networking capital of the world.  Over 92.9% of the local Internet population visit and revisit Facebook frequently according to ComScore. “One million users in just 3 months is no small feat,” said Smart Broadband Internet and Data Services Head Giovanni Bacareza. “It means that Filipinos are still really into Facebook which means, there is great potential in this market.” As an official Facebook mobile partner, Smart Communications, Inc . Smart leads in making mobile broadband more affordable

As Asia leads the world in broadband growth, the Philippines’ wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), continues to make mobile broadband connectivity more affordable to more and more Filipinos. As evidenced by a study conducted by Australia-based market analysis firm Ovum, the Philippines—together with Malaysia, Pakistan, and India—has one of the lowest broadband cost among emerging markets within the region. “Demand for broadband services in emerging markets continues to be stifled by high prices. In some countries, broadband pricing was double or triple the price of an equivalent service in a more developed market,” said Ovum senior analyst Richard Hurst. “In addition, lower GDP per capita in most emerging markets means that broadband is only available to the highest socioeconomic groups," Hurst added. A history of firsts Smart pioneered the country’s first bucket pricing scheme of P10 per 30 minutes of mobile surfing in 2006 and in 2010 it introduced UnliSu

Smart offers direct access to PAGASA bulletins

Remember the time when we all had to wait for the six o’clock evening news to get next day’s weather forecast? Or the days when we had to patiently sit by the radio, lest we miss the announcement of the storm signal that would determine if we should brave the rains or stay at home? Thankfully, significant progress has already led to media giving live updates and up-to-the-minute reports, especially during times of weather disturbances. Add to that the prevalent use of the Internet and social media by newspaper, TV and radio organizations to disseminate information that would help their publics prepare for typhoons. And if that’s not enough, leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. has given the public direct access to official bulletins from the country’s weather bureau. The telco partnered with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to enable people to get weather and typhoon information through the ubiquitous mob

Smart turns to Ethernet to meet surge in data usage

One way to maximize your road network, without building more roads, is to come up with a dynamic traffic management system that at the very least, enables cars to switch to unused lanes to avoid congestion. This is basically what Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is doing for its transport network in building a Metro Ethernet transport network CEN (Carrier Ethernet Network). Metro Ethernet is the use of Carrier Ethernet technology in metropolitan area networks (MANs). It is a new transport technology that allows Smart to maximize or make more efficient use of its bandwidth to keep up with the increase in high-bandwidth services like video, gaming and business multimedia communications on a global scale across metro and regional networks. “Since 2009, we’ve been making enhancements to our transport network to accommodate increased data usage from a growing wireless broadband subscriber base whose needs are getting increasingly sophisticated and complex,” said PLDT-Smart Technology Grou

Facebook makes sharing more selective

Facebook on Tuesday announced it is rolling out improvements aimed at letting users be more selective about who gets to see what they post at the world's largest online social network. The move came in the face of a challenge from a freshly launched Google+ social network, which has won legions of fans by allowing people to share content based on which "circles" friends fall into. "We're announcing a bunch of improvements that make it easier to share posts, photos, tags and other content with exactly the people you want," Facebook's Chris Cox said in a blog post. "You have told us that 'who can see this?' could be clearer across Facebook, so we have made changes to make this more visual and straightforward," he continued. The main change at Facebook will be moving controls from a settings page to places next to posts, photos and tags so people can make decisions about sharing while looking at content they are about to send to profiles.

DOH supports MMDA on enforcement of smoking ban

The Department of Health supports the decision of the  Metropolitan Manila Development Authority  (MMDA), together with local government units, to pursue the enforcement of its smoking ban in areas covered by  Republic Act No. 9211  (Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003). The Mandaluyong City Regional Trial Court Branch 213 recently issued a temporary restraining order in a complaint filed by two private employees caught smoking in front of Farmer’s Market in Cubao, a major loading and unloading point for buses and other public utility vehicles. Republic Act 9211 defines the places where the smoking ban can be enforced, and the court held that sidewalks and public thoroughfares are beyond the operation of the ban. Despite these developments, the DOH continues to drumbeat its advocacy against smoking. The ill effects of smoking are experienced not only by smokers themselves, but also by the unsuspecting public. Inhaling second hand smoke can increase the risk of noncommunicable diseases in ad
