China-based network infiltrates computers in 103 countries

Agence France-Presse|OTTAWA - A electronic spying operation based primarily in China has infiltrated government and private computers in 103 countries around the world, including those of the Dalai Lama, according to a report released Sunday. The report, compiled by specialists based at the Munk Center for International Studies at the University of Toronto, said the spying was being done from computers based almost exclusively in China. "Up to 30 percent of the infected hosts are considered high-value targets and include computers located at ministries of foreign affairs, embassies, international organizations, news media and NGOs (non-governmental organizations)," the report said. However, the researchers said they could not argue conclusively that the Chinese government was involved. They insisted that attributing all these operations to intelligence gathering by the Chinese state "is wrong and misleading." "Numbers can tell a different story," the repor

Coldplay take boredom break

Bang Showbiz | Coldplay have decided to take a break because they fear people are getting bored of them. The group have postponed plans to begin work on the follow-up to "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" to figure out which direction to take their music in next. Guitarist Johnny Buckland revealed: "We ended up doing much more touring than we originally planned so there's no time to do proper justice to a new project. And anyway people may need a bit of a break from us. "We're taking a little break and let's see where we get after that. We've got a lot of ideas but we want to find a new way to go and that may take some time." Buckland also spoke out about the military-style uniforms the group have donned to promote the album and accompanying tour, and claims the band - singer Chris Martin, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion - hand-stitched each one. He added to Time Out Dubai magazine: "Guy came up with the direction. T

Philippines: Nation of Servants

An alliance of Filipino migrant organizations in Hong Kong decried the recent assault made by a Hong Kong journalist against the rights and dignity of domestic workers. "We hope that Mr. Chip Tsao will be civilized and humble enough to admit that his column was way out of line. We demand no less that than a public apology from Mr. Tsao and the HK Magazine Online, its publisher and editor. Such contemptuous regard for migrant workers is unconscionable," said the United Filipinos in Hong Kong. The group was referring to the column "The War At Home" written by Tsao for the HK Magazine online website which drew public outrage among Filipinos and Pinoy groups. "Mr. Tsao's column did not even give intelligent light on the Spratly issue, the topic he was delving on. Instead, it became a cheap shot, distasteful and demeaning of domestic workers who are already under extreme working and living conditions in HK," said the group in a press statement Monday. The g

RP to rescue historic chancery in US

WASHINGTON DC -Dwarfed by a campus building and another diplomatic outpost, the old Philippine Embassy along the District's "Embassy Row" is a sad sight. Damaged by fire last November, the four-storey building is decrepit, grass growing tall in cracks in the concrete, inhabited by rodents and other undesirables. But the Philippine government is rescuing the historic structure - the seat of the Commonwealth when the country was invaded by the Japanese in World War II - by allocating $250,000 for repairs. Consul General Domingo "Ding" Nolasco revealed that Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo recently approved the funds to fix the building and use the first floor for the Philippine Embassy's consular service. "We were already given funds by the home office for us to renovate the old chancery across the street so we can use that as an office extension," he said. The old Embassy building lies on prime real estate along Massachusetts Ave. which host

'Monsters vs. Aliens' fuels booming box office

Reuters | LOS ANGELES - What recession? Hollywood's overflowing cash registers rang even louder on Sunday as the cartoon "Monsters vs. Aliens" scared up the biggest opening of the year at the North American box office. DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc's first big 3-D film sold an estimated $58.2 million worth of tickets across the United States and Canada during its first three days, the studio said. The opening was at the upper end of analysts' forecasts within a $50 million to $60 million range. The year's previous best start was $55.2million for "Watchmen" earlier this month, though that superhero film quickly stalled, and finally crawled across the $ 100 million mark last Thursday. "Monsters vs. Aliens" also set a record for a 3-D opening -- $32.6million, or about 56 percent of the gross, the studio said. The balance came from traditional movie theaters. Hollywood is betting a lot on 3-D, with about 40 films scheduled to run in 3-D over the

Sarver, 27, from Jasper, Texas, lost after what host Ryan Seacrest set was a record-setting 36 million-plus votes cast on the hit television talent show, and the judges opted not to use their once-per-season veto to keep the burly singer. "Michael, you're going home -- sorry," said Simon Cowell after a conference by the judges that sent the show into overtime. Experimental Ebola vaccine used on human

BERLIN - It was a nightmare scenario worthy of a sci-fi movie script: A scientist accidentally pricked her finger with a needle used to inject the deadly Ebola virus into lab mice. Within hours of the accident, several members of a tightly bound, yet farflung community of virologists, biologists and others tensely gathered in a trans-Atlantic telephone conference to map out a way to save her life. The outcome was stunning. Within 24hours of the March 12 lab accident, an experimental vaccine -never before tried on humans - was on its way to Germany from a lab in Canada. Within 40 hours, the at-risk scientist, a 45-year-old woman whose identity has not been revealed, was injected with the vaccine. So far, so good. If the woman is still healthy on April 2, she can consider herself safe. Ebola hemorrhagic fever, mostly seen only in Africa, is one of the world's most feared diseases. It begins with flu-like symptoms, followed by bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Days later, some victims beg

Red meat raises risk of all kinds of death

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People who eat the most red meat and the most processed meat have the highest overall risk of death from all causes, including heart disease and cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday. The National Cancer Institute study is one of the largest to look at the highly controversial and emotive issue of whether eating meat is indeed bad for health. Rashmi Sinha and colleagues looked at the records of more than 500,000 people aged 50 to 71 who filled out questionnaires on their diet and other health habits. Even when other factors were accounted for --eating fresh fruits and vegetables, smoking, exercise, obesity -- the heaviest meat-eaters were more likely to die over the next 10 years than the people who ate the least amount of meat. "Red and processed meat intakes were associated with modest increases in total mortality, cancer mortality, and cardiovascular disease mortality," Sinha and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine. They divid

Scientists find new species in Papua New Guinea

SYDNEY - A brilliant green tree frog with huge black eyes, jumping spiders and a striped gecko are among more than 50 new animal species scientists have discovered in a remote, mountainous region of Papua New Guinea. The discoveries were announced Wednesday by Washington D.C.-based Conservation International, which spent the past several months analyzing more than 600 animal species the group found during its expedition to the South Pacific island nation in July and August. Of the animals discovered, 50 spider species, three frogs and a gecko appear to have never been described in scientific literature before, the conservation group said. The new frogs include a tiny brown animal with a sharp chirp, a bug-eyed bright green tree frog and another frog with a loud ringing call. One of the jumping spiders is shiny and pale green, while another is furry and brown. "If you're finding things that are that big and that spectacular that are new, that's really an indication that the

Anti-Willie Revillame posters sprout in Cebu

At least 10 posters branding popular "Wowowee" host Willie Revillame as "Capitalist Whore" and "Wowpera" have mysteriously appeared on Escarrio Street, Barangay Kamputhaw in Cebu City. ABS-CBN chief: Let us support Manny

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. chairman Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III has urged the public to support Manny Pacquiao despite the trouble caused by his recent "dispute" with Solar Entertainment. "Suportahan na lang natin si Manny, he's a very good boxer and after all, he is a Filipino hero," said Mr. Lopez during a forum he held Tuesday with ABS-CBN employees. He added that Pacquiao means a lot to the country as "he brings a lot of joy ang pride to all of us Filipinos." Lopez also stressed that ABS-CBN News has addressed Pacquiao's situation in an ethical manner. "Ang masasabi ko lang is that we acted in an ethical manner, we did not violate any of the restrictions on the embargo," he said. "There is no deal on the politics." This was contrary to claims that ABS-CBN News violated its agreement with the boxer concerning the airing of his announcement aside from talks that it will help Pacquiao in his political ambitions.
