Video Scandals: Eat Bulaga and Marian Rivera

This week's most talked about and most viewed videos on youtube.com are all kapuso stars of GMA Network. Nokia unveils three new phone models

HELSINKI (Reuters) -Nokia unveiled on Thursday three new cellphone models, including the successor to its slim hit model Nokia 6300, as the world's top handset vendor pushes to win a larger share of a shrinking market. Cellphone sales will dive this year, hit by consumers' reluctance to spend on new gadgets in the midst of the economic recession and large inventories built up by phone sellers at the end of last year. Nokia's 6700 classic --the follow-up to the Nokia 6300, which was among Nokia's top sellers for many quarters -- will sell for 235 euros ($307.4) starting in the second quarter, when excluding subsidies and taxes. The model will have a 5-megapixel camera and GPS navigation with Nokia Maps. "Our new arrival shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009," Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President at Nokia, said in a statement. Nokia also unveiled the 6303 and 2700models, which are

Five farm workers in RP infected with Ebola strain

Agence France-Presse|Four more pig farm workers in the Philippines have tested positive for a strain of the Ebola virus that is not deadly to humans, taking the number of human cases to five, the government said Friday. The Philippines has suffered an outbreak of the Ebola-Reston virus among pigs, and Health Secretary Francisco Duque said it was possible the farm workers were infected by the animals. One farm worker was last week confirmed to have been infected by the disease, and Duque said Friday the number of human cases had now reached five. If a link is proved, it would be the first time humans have contracted the disease from pigs. World Heath Organization expert on infectious diseases Julie Hall said the virus still posed "low risk" to human health. The government quarantined farms in the Philippine towns of Pandi and Talavera after the Ebola-Reston virus was discovered in pigs in July 2008. Ebola-Reston was first detected in 1989 in laboratory monkeys sent from the Ph

World economy may lose 51 million jobs

GENEVA (Reuters) - Up to 51 million jobs worldwide could disappear by the end of this year as a result of the economic slowdown that has turned into a global employment crisis, a United Nations agency said on Wednesday. The International Labor Organization (ILO) said that under its most optimistic scenario, this year would finish with 18million more unemployed people than at the end of 2007, with a global unemployment rate of 6.1. More realistically, it said 30 million more people could lose their jobs if financial turmoil persists through 2009, pushing up the world's unemployment to 6.5percent, compared to 6.0 percent in 2008and 5.7 percent in 2007. In the worst-case economic scenario, the Global Employment Trends report said 51million more jobs could be lost by the end of this year, creating a 7.1 percent global unemployment rate. "If the recession deepens in 2009, as many forecasters expect, the global jobs crisis will worsen sharply," it said. "We can expect that

300,000 Could Lose Jobs In Philippines Amid Crisis

MANILA (AFP)--Up to 300,000 people could lose their jobs in the Philippines over the next six months as the global financial crisis deepens, labor secretary Marianito Roque warned Wednesday. Some 15,000 have been laid off over the past two months while 19,000 others had their work week cut to four days or less, he told reporters. He said that a "worst-case scenario" would see the number of jobless rise to between 250,000 and 300,000 by the end of June. He described the job cuts so far, which include more than 10,000 in the Calabarzon industrial belt south of Manila, as being within the "manageable level" in relation to a nationwide work force of about 37 million. Unemployment in the Philippines currently stands at 6.8%. The government is holding talks with employers' groups to ease the fallout from the global economic downturn, which has heavily hit the country's two top export earners electronics and garments, where most jobs have gone so far. Komiks Presents: Flash Bomba on ABS-CBN

Flash Bomba was man who lost the use of his legs in an accident. Because of this, he trained the rest of his body to an incredible level of athletic ability and did everyday stuff using his hands to compensate for the loss of his ability to walk. Eventually he heard a rumour about a "Tikbalang" (a mythological creature with the body of a man and the head of a horse) who would grant powers to anyone who could defeat it in battle. Flash Bomba challenged the Tikbalang and set a time and place for the battle. He defeated it despite his physical limitations and the Tikbalang granted him superpowers. But as a jest, the Tikbalang gave him powers that made him look awkward. Flash was given the Tikbalang's magic hair, said talisman allowing Flash to transform into his super-powered version - a being with large hands and feet, as well as superhuman powers. The Commission on Higher Education Tuesday said it will decide this March whether or not to approve a proposal to increase to five years the curriculum of nursing students. CHED Chairman Emmanuel Angeles said a technical panel is currently studying the advantages and disadvantages of adding an additional year--or two semesters--to the current four-year nursing curriculum. Angeles said that the panel is set to finish its review by the end of next month. Subsequently, the CHED will start its consultations to students and parents. The final decision on CHED's proposal, Angeles said, will be announced before March ends. Angeles believed it is "more economical" for students to take a five-year nursing course. With review sessions already integrated in the fifth year, Angeles said students no longer have to pay for expensive review sessions outside of school. "Students have overloaded subjects in a four-year course. And they go to school during the three summer breaks. Aft

Scientists discover immortal jellyfish

TURRITOPSIS nutricula may be the world's only "immortal" creature. Jellyfish usually die after propagating but Turritopsis reverts to a sexually immature stage after reaching adulthood and is capable of rejuvenating itself. The 4-5mm diameter creature, technically known as a hydrozoan, is the only known animal that is capable of reverting to its juvenile polyp state. Theoretically, this cycle can repeat indefinitely, rendering it potentially immortal. Found in warm tropical waters Turritopsis is believed to be spreading across the world as ships' ballast water is discharged in ports. Though solitary, they are predatory creatures and evolve asexually from a polyp stage. The jellyfish and its reversal of the ageing process is now the focus of research by marine biologists and geneticists. It is thought to achieve the feat through the cell development process of transdifferentiation, in which cells transform from one type to another. The switching of cell roles is usuall

Internet users worldwide surpass 1 billion

Global Internet usage reached more than 1billion unique visitors in December, with 41.3 percent in the Asia-Pacific region, according to a report released Friday by ComScore. The study looked at Internet users over the age of 15 who accessed the Net from their home or work computers. Europe grabbed the next largest slice of the global Internet audience, with 28percent, followed by the United States, with an 18.4 percent slice. But Latin America, while comprising just 7.4 percent of the global Internet audience, is the region to watch, noted Jamie Gavin, a ComScore senior analyst. "The U.S. is slowing down in its growth and momentum, but Latin America, with social networking and the mobile Internet, is expected to gain momentum over the next few years," Gavin said.
