Trying to prevent lymphedema after breast cancer

WASHINGTON -Hospitals in about a dozen US states are testing whether some simple steps, such as arm-strengthening exercises, could reduce the risk of one of breast cancer's troubling legacies _ the painful and sometimes severe arm swelling called lymphedema. Lymphedema has long been a neglected side effect of cancer surgery and radiation: Many women say they never were warned, even though spotting this problem early improves outcomes. And while less invasive surgical techniques mean fewer breast cancer patients today than just a few years ago should face lymphedema, it's a lingering threat for tens of thousands of survivors because it can strike two decades after their tumor was treated. "I have ladies tell me the lymphedema is much worse than their cancer because the cancer's cured," says Dr. Electra Paskett, an epidemiologist at Ohio State University who is leading the first-of-its-kind research into possible protective steps. Among them: Wearing elastic sleeves

New Year's Eve 'sex party' hit

Agence France-Presse|KUALA LUMPUR -Malaysian authorities have condemned rumoured plans for a New Year's Eve sex party at a remote beach, while police warned the "no-underwear" event could be a con job. Newspaper reports said the party for the under-40s, to be held in southern Johor state bordering Singapore, was being advertised through a website that asked for 250 ringgit (72 dollars) as an entrance fee. "A sex party is against our culture and religion and if it went on, it would damage the country's reputation worldwide," Tourism Minister Azalina Othman said according to the New Straits Times newspaper on Tuesday. "There are other events organised to usher the New Year which are hip, fun and suitable to our culture." Party organisers had reportedly said that male guests were banned from wearing briefs to the event, while women were only permitted to wear G-string underwear which had to be removed after midnight. Pacquiao dominates ESPN Star Sports polls

With hours to go before the results of ESPN Star Sports online poll results are announced in its "Champion of Champions" survey, Filipino ring idol and national treasure Manny Pacquiao dominates the latest numbers released. As of last report Pacquiao had garnered 90.75 of the votes cast while Malaysia's squash queen Nicol David had a mere 9.25 percent. The results of the "Champion of Champions" survey will be announced on ESPN Sportscenter tonight. Meantime in the ESPN All SportsNation Team where the public was asked to choose the five to athletes in the world in 2008, Pacquiao was again a runaway leader with a massive 98.1 percent of the votes tallied so far. Beijing Olympic Games swimming sensation Michael Phelps who won a record-breaking eight gold medals was second with 1.6percent of the votes followed by sprinter Usain Bolt with 1.3, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant 1.1 and golfing great Tiger Woods with 1.0 percent.(ABS-CBN News)

Madonna biggest 2008 N. American tour attraction

Reuters | LOS ANGELES -Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet" concert tour was the biggest-grossing music tour of 2008 in North America, raking in $105.3 million, concert tracking magazine Pollstar said on Monday. The Material Girl, whose 58-show world tour finished in Brazil last week, was closely followed by another solo diva -- Canadian-born Celine Dion, who made $94 million in North America from her first tour since ending an almost five-year residency in Las Vegas a year ago. Rock veterans The Eagles were third on Pollstar's list, grossing $73.4 million for their tour to support possibly their last studio album "Long Road out of Eden". ABS-CBN: No truth to Web rumors of "Twilight" adaptation

abs-cbnNEWS.com  |  ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation said there is no truth to the Internet buzz about the company doing a local version of the hit movie/novel "Twilight". "There is no truth to the Web reports, particularly in the Perez Hilton blogsite, that ABS-CBN is doing a local adaptation of "Twilight". ABS-CBN will be the first to announce if it is, in fact doing so," according to ABS-CBN Corporate Communications' Bong Osorio. Last week, abs-cbnNEWs.com did a story on an Internet report about the adaptation. The prospect of a local adaptation of "Twilight" has caused a lot of discussion, sometimes heated, on various Internet discussion fora.

Chinese dairy firms to pay out millions to milk victims: state media

Agence France-Presse  | BEIJING - Twenty-two Chinese dairy firms will pay 160 million dollars into a compensation fund for families of babies that died or fell ill after drinking tainted milk, state media said Monday. Families of children who died after being given the adulterated formula will each receive 200,000 yuan (29,000 dollars) from the fund, the China Daily newspaper reported. Parents of infants who were hospitalized will get between 30,000 and 50,000 yuan, it said. At least six babies in China died this year and another 294,000 fell ill after drinking milk laced with the industrial chemical melamine, which is normally used to make plastic. Melamine was mixed into the watered-down milk to make it appear richer in protein. But the chemical caused severe kidney problems and urinary tract problems in babies who drank the tainted milk powder. The scandal, which emerged in September after initially being covered up, shook the foundations of a Chinese food industry that was already

Pacquiao amasses huge lead in ESPN’s ‘champ of champs’

MANILA, Philippines – Might as well add the  ESPN Star Sports'  Champion of Champions’ title to Manny Pacquiao’s growing list of achievements. Pacquiao, who fought in three weight divisions to go 3-0 in 2008, could very well be the winner of the online poll contest as he enjoys a huge lead over Malaysian squash player Nicol David. As of Saturday, results of the online poll gave Pacquiao an overwhelming 80.74 lead over Nicol. The Filipino boxing icon garnered 90.73 percent of the votes while the world’s top ranked squash player earned 9.63 percent. Pacquiao made history in 2008 when he became the first Asian to wear four world titles in three different weight divisions. He is the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) and The Ring magazine’s super featherweight champion after beating Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in a split decision on March 15. He then added the WBC lightweight belt after scoring a ninth-round knockout win over David Diaz on June 28. But what made Pacquiao sort of a dem

Yahoo! Top 10 Fighters of the Year

The race for the 2008 Fighter of the Year award is not much of a race at all. It’s about as competitive as the 1973 Belmont, when the great Secretariat won by 31 lengths, or the 1940 NFL championship game, when the  Chicago Bears  routed the Washington Redskins  73-0. Picking the winner this year is as easy as falling asleep on the couch after a large holiday meal. It doesn’t take much effort. But there were plenty of good individual performances in 2008, so we’ll count them down from No. 10 to No. 1, when we pick our Yahoo! Sports Fighter of the Year.-By  Kevin Iole , Yahoo! Yet Another Top 10 List of Best Movies for 2008

The website Tribune.com has compiled it's best movies for 2008. 1 "The Visitor":  What starts as a swell little slice-of-life about a grief-worn widower (Oscar hopeful Richard Jenkins) who learns to play the drums from a friendly Arab (Haaz Sleiman) ultimately becomes something else - a white-hot polemic that aims to change or enhance your feelings about immigration. (Oh, is THAT all?) But like a shrewd salesman who keeps his suitcase out of view, writer-director Thomas McCarthy doesn't start with the hard sell. He seduces us with a beautifully written story of friendship, revealing the embedded deportation drama only when we're nice and disarmed. Sneaky! Ultimately, we're obliged to accept the director's vision of immigration - not as a question of politics, but a fact of interpersonal America necessity. And he does it with breathtaking conviction. 2 "The Dark Knight":  Dreadful, and I mean that in the most complimentary sense. Gambling the res

Wal-Mart to start selling iPhones on Sunday

Reuters  | CHICAGO – Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Friday it will start selling certain models of Apple Inc's iPhone on Sunday, but the popular cell phones will not priced as low as some anticipated. Wal-Mart plans to sell the black 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G model, which holds about 2,000 songs, for $197. The 16-gigabyte model, in black or white, will be priced at $297. All of the phones require a new two-year service agreement from AT&T Inc or a qualified upgrade, Wal-Mart said. Wal-Mart also said its stores could match local competitors' advertised prices during a promotional period. Numerous websites had previously speculated that Apple would offer a 4-gigabyte model of the iPhone for $99 at Wal-Mart stores. The phones will be available in nearly 2,500 stores beginning Sunday, December 28.

Agence France-Presse|WASHINGTON - Micro-blogging service Twitter is gaining 5,000 to 10,000 new accounts a day and most of its users have joined this year, according to a study released on Tuesday. Internet marketing company HubSpot, in a "State of the Twittersphere" report, said 70percent of the estimated four to five million people using Twitter have signed up in 2008 and 20percent have joined in the last 60 days. It said the average user has been on the real-time short-messaging service for about 275 days. "A year ago Twitter was a relatively small community of techies and Web 2.0 geeks, now it is going mainstream," the report said. "Twitter is not only being talked about and used by a lot more people, but more and more marketing industry events and conferences are using Twitter as a standard means of communication," it said. HubSpot said 35percent of Twitter users have 10 or fewer "followers" --people who subscribe to receive their 140-charac

Chinese tainted milk company declared bankrupt

Agence France-Presse|WELLINGTON - The Chinese firm that sparked a nationwide tainted milk crisis that made nearly 300,000 children ill and killed six has been declared bankrupt, New Zealand shareholder Fonterra said Wednesday. A court in Shijiazhuang in the northern province of Hebei had issued a bankruptcy order against Sanlu Group, the company whose melamine-tainted baby formula triggered the crisis in September, said Fonterra. The world's biggest international trader of dairy products, Fonterra held a 43percent stake in Sanlu, one of 22 dairy companies identified as selling toxic milk products. "This bankruptcy order is not a surprise to us. We were aware that Sanlu was in a very difficult situation and faced mounting debts as a result of the melamine contamination crisis," said Fonterra chief executive Andrew Ferrier. Sanlu would be managed by a court-appointed receiver who would assume responsibility for selling the company's assets and payment of creditors over

Baguio, City of Poinsettias?

With is beautiful, bright red star shaped flowers, no doubt that it is considered one of the many tourist attractions here in Baguio. Thousand or maybe millions bloom on the month of December. Poinsettia is also known as "Flame Leaf" or "Flower of the Holy Night". The name says it all! Here's the legend of Poinsettia: The legend of the poinsettia comes from Mexico. It tells of a girl named Maria and her little brother Pablo. They were very poor but always looked forward to the Christmas festival. Each year a large manger scene was set up in the village church, and the days before Christmas were filled with parades and parties. The two children loved Christmas but were always saddened because they had no money to buy presents. They especially wished that they could give something to the church for the Baby Jesus. But they had nothing. One Christmas Eve, Maria and Pablo set out for church to attend the service. On their way they picked some weeds growing along th

'Silent Night', The World's Most Famous Christmas Carol is 190 y/o

OBERNDORF - Born on a cold night in the chapel of a small Austrian village, "Silent Night," the world's most famous Christmas carol, is celebrating its 190th anniversary. The song, known as "Stille Nacht" in the original German, was first performed on December 24, 1818, in the tiny hamlet of Oberndorf, as a local assistant priest, Joseph Mohr, sought to comfort his flock, racked by poverty and misery in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. "He asked his friend Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher, to compose the music for six verses he had written two years prior, and they performed the song together at mass with the help of a simple guitar," says Renate Ebeling-Winkler, a historian and expert on the topic. The song was an immediate success but remained a secret for many years, until an organ delivery man from Tyrol took note of it on his way through the village. It soon became a favorite with Tyrolean singers, travelling up and down the continent in the win

Parekoy on ABS-CBN

Cast: John Prats, Zanjoe Marudo, Jayson Gainza, Angelu de Leon, Bobby Andrews, Dennis Padilla, Long Mejia, Tetchie Agbayani, Maria Isabel Lopez, Igi Boy Flores, Mikylla Ramirez Director: Randy Santiago The afternoon timeslot has often been associated with drama shows, either of the Tagalog or Mexican telenovela variety. ABS-CBN plans to change that with the program Parekoy, a comedy that runs for only 30 minutes like American sitcoms instead of the usual hour-long show. The show's creators describe it as a komediserye, something with a "structure of a teleserye, but the feel and look of a sitcom." The series is about the misadventures of friends Joseph, Mario, and Jess (John Prats, Zanjoe Marudo and Jayson Gainza, respectively) and how they think up ingenuous ways to help people in need. A fourth member of their barkada, Ringo, died when they were just teenagers. Ringo's death holds the key to a mystery that will unravel as the story goes along. Think of the show as a

Michael Jackson camp denies health problems

Reuters | LOS ANGELES - A spokesman for Michael Jackson released a statement on Monday denying as a "total fabrication" a report claiming that the former King of Pop needs a lung transplant due to a rare respiratory disease. The statement, attributed to Jackson's "official and sole spokesperson, Dr. Tohme Tohme" and issued by Los Angeles firm Scoop Marketing, cites an interview with writer Ian Halperin in British newspaper the Sunday Express in which Halperin said Jackson was suffering from Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency. Halperin, who is at work on an unauthorized biography of the singer, also claims Jackson can barely speak, suffers from emphysema and internal bleeding, and has lost 95 percent of the vision in his left eye. "Concerning this author's allegations, we would hope in the future that legitimate media will not continue to be exploited by such an obvious attempt to promote this unauthorized 'biography,'" said the statement attrib

Michael Jackson Battling Potentially Fatal Illness

Michael Jackson is reportedly in desperate need of an emergency transplant operation to save his life from a rare lung condition, according to the author of a new biography of the singer. Best-selling author Ian Halperin has completed a book about Jackson's life, which claims that the pop icon, 50, suffers from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a potentially fatal genetic illness, as well as emphysema and gastrointestinal bleeding. He's had it for years, but it's gotten worse, Halperin told In Touch magazine. He needs a lung transplant but may be too weak to go through with it... [But] it's the [gastrointestinal] bleeding that is the most problematic part. It could kill him. Halperin also claims that the Thriller and Bad singer can barely speak and is 95-percent blind in his left eye. Earlier this year, Jackson was photographed in a wheelchair. A few weeks ago, he was spotted receiving help walking, while wearing a Zorro style mask. Jackson's rep was not available for

Here is Time Magazine Top 10 Scientific Discoveries of 2008: 1. Large Hadron Collider Good news! The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) -the massive particle accelerator straddling the Swiss-French border - didn't destroy the world! The bad news: The contraption didn't really work either. In September, the 17-mile collider was switched on for the first time, putting to rest the febrile webchatter that the machine would create an artificial black hole capable of swallowing the planet or at least a sizeable piece of Europe - a bad day no matter what. No lucid observer ever thought that would really happen, but what they did expect was that the LHC would operate as advertised, recreating conditions not seen since instants after the Big Bang and giving physicists a peek into those long-vanished moments. Things looked good at first, until a helium leak caused the collider to shut down after less than two weeks. Repairs are underway and the particles should begin spinning again sometime in
