89,000 took the November 2008 Nursing Board Exam

More than 89,000 nursing graduates across the country took the Nursing Licensure Examination on Saturday, a record number according to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). The PRC Board of Nursing said the number of examinees is the largest in the country's history. Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) president Dr. Leah Paquiz said they are expecting a 43percent passing rate for this weekend's examination, or an estimated 38,000 new nurses by January 2009. The only problem, Paquiz said, is how these new nurses would find work in the country. She said the Philippines has an "oversupply" of nurses, while its Asian neighbors such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan, as well as European and North American countries, are in short supply of nurses. Paquiz said the Philippines could help these countries in addressing their nursing problems, but for Filipino nurses to go abroad they should first have two years' experience in the country - which

Apple offers limited Black Friday price cuts

Reuters | SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc's much-anticipated Black Friday event offered consumers discounts on Mac computers, iPods and accessories at levels similar to years past, despite speculation about deeper price cuts. Apple, a company renown for its marketing prowess, had stoked consumer excitement by announcing a one-day Black Friday "shopping event," without giving any further details. The company cut prices by roughly 5 to 10 percent on certain items. A 13-inch MacBook was being offered for $1,200, a discount of $100, while an iPod touch was being sold for $378, a discount of $21. The iPhone, which has been hugely popular since its launch last summer, was not on sale. However, analysts said at least some Apple stores were matching the bigger price cuts of other resellers if a shopper brings in proof. At an Apple retail store in downtown San Francisco, more than 150 people lined up ahead of the 8 a.m. opening time. Many people knew in advance about the sale. Nicolas M

10 Most Interesting Traditional Foods

Reuters Life! | SINGAPORE - Never mind slow food. Lonely Planet's travel guidebook "Best in Travel 2009" lists the global communities cultivating and preserving old food. This list is not endorsed by Reuters: 1. Siwa Oasis dates, Egypt In 332 BC, Alexander the Great followed birds across the scalding sands of northwestern Egypt to find the legendary Siwa Oasis. His goal was a private consultation with the oracle of the Sun God, Amon-Ra, who would anoint him the next Egyptian pharaoh, but there can be no doubt that he sampled the dates and olives of Siwa, among the finest in the world. Today each crop is still cultivated in private gardens tended in the traditional way. 2. Hachiyagaki persimmons, Japan These priceless honey-sweet persimmons were once given as gifts to Japanese royalty. But with the tilling-under of fields for silk production, the fruit trees disappeared until the 1940s when a 20-year-old farmer launched an extensive search and located a single remaining &#

My Red Mobile Sim has arrived

I received my Red Mobile Sim today, November 28 at 11:45 am. This was a replacement for my umobile simcard which is now Red Mobile. Red Mobile is totally different from the features of umobile. Connectivity Resource Enterprise Inc. (CURE) still owns Red Mobile which is another simcard powered by SMART. Some SMART agents said that Red Mobile's features and rates will compete on SUN Cellular's features and rates. Will RM's rates beats SUN Cellular's rates? Red Mobile is obviously not into unlimited service for calls but they are offering STABLE, CLEARER and Countrywide signal with the most affordable "per-minute" rates. SUN Cellular is still the only telco in the Philippines offering unlimited to most of its services including text, call and VAT but its weakness is its UNSTABLE signal in some areas. Obviously this will become stable if more cell sites are built. If you visit the Red Mobile's wap site, You will see the table comparing Red Mobile's rates w

PEP: Ten Things that Malaysian actress Carmen Soo liked about the Philippines

Filipinos knew about Carmen Soo when celebrity couple Jericho Rosales and Heart Evangelista broke up earlier this year.  The Malaysian actress-model was blamed for the breakup, particularly because she was doing a Philippine TV series titled Kahit Isang Saglit with Jericho. But most Pinoy TV viewers know a little about the star who plays "Garie" in  Kahit Isang Saglit . Carmen is 75 percent Malay and 25 percent British. She speaks four languages: Malay, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.  She also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. At 17, she started modeling in Malaysia and left for Hong Kong to pursue this career.  Not long afterwards, she had a minor acting role in a Jackie Chan movie titled Gorgeous .  And then she landed a leading role in Aaron Kwok's musical special.  Her acting career includes roles in the stage plays The Girl from Ipoh and Rose, Rose, I Love You . Carmen stayed in Manila for a couple of months for the taping of the joint project

Japanese man releases hundreds of worms in train

Agence France-Presse | TOKYO - A Japanese man was arrested for releasing hundreds of beetle larvae inside a moving express train to try to scare female passengers, police said Tuesday. "I wanted to see women get scared and shake their legs," police quoted 35-year-old Manabu Mizuta as saying. He was arrested on the spot by a patrolling police officer after releasing the creatures on the Keihan line in Osaka prefecture. "He would go close to women on the train, any woman, and pour out the worms from containers," said a police spokesman. Local police had been on alert after 18 similar cases of released worms had been reported this month by the same train operator. "When the arrest was made, the man had nearly emptied a container, which is believed to have held 200 worms," he said. "You cannot count them because there are so many." Mizuta had 10 containers in his backpack estimated to contain a total of 3,600 worms, police said. "We have the wo

GMA opposes ABS-CBN's digital TV application

By Lenie Lectura of BusinessMirror.com GMA Network Inc. is blocking the bid of rival ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. to offer digital television service to consumers. In a filing with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), GMA said ABS-CBN’s application to convert its existing analog frequency channel to digital is really a move to operate a new service and not just a conversion. “Unfortunately, ABS-CBN misleads the affected parties by designating its petition as one for migration and conversion to digital service,” said GMA. ABS-CBN is currently applying for a new frequency, preferably within the 500 to 506-megahertz range, which is not yet

Roxas warns against postponement of 2010 Elections

Liberal President Senator Mar Roxas today warned the administration against any blatant attempt to stay in power and perpetuate its nefarious rule that has spawned one controversy after another. "To the administration: this is a warning. Patugtugin ninyo ang Cha-Cha ngayon para pahabain ang termino ni Pangulong Arroyo at talagang malilintikan kayo sa taumbayan (push Cha-Cha to extend President Arroyo's term and you'll see the wrath of the people)," he said. "Any proposed change in the Constitution must be discussed in a thorough and sober manner after the 2010 elections through a constitutional convention that should be elected in the 2010 elections. Railroading it now through a constituent assembly is against the people's will," he stressed.. Roxas said that the Liberal Party is united against any attempt to manipulate the Constitution to favor those in power now. "Nagkakaisa ang Partido Liberal laban sa term extension ng Pangulo at kontra sa C

TV and other factors lead to early teen sex

Reuters | NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Too much television, low self-esteem, disappointing grades and poor family relationships can be a formula that adds up to early teenage sex, according to a new study. "If you add up all the factors, you get a much more powerful predictor of who has sex and who doesn't," said Dr. Janet Hyde, of the University of Wisconsin, who headed the research team. "One thing probably by itself is not going to do it, but by the time you get two or three risk factors, things start to go downhill," she added. Hyde and her team studied 273 teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15. About 15 percent of them had early sex. "Kids who engage in early sexual activity are much less likely to use any kind of protection which increases their risk for teen pregnancy and acquiring sexually transmitted diseases," Hyde said. One of the best predictors for early teen sex is television viewing, in part because television programs portray higher le

Tonight (FM Static) Music Video and Lyrics

I remember the times we spent together On those drives We had a million questions All about our lives And when we got to New York Everything felt right I wish you were here with me Tonight I remember the days we spent together Were not enough And I used to feel like dreamin' Except we always woke up Never thought not having you here now Would hurt so much Tonight I've fallen and I can't get up I need your loving hands to come and pick me up And every night I miss you, I can just look up And know the stars are Holding you, holding you, holding you Tonight I remember the time you told me About when you were eight And all those things you said that night That just couldn't wait I remember the car you were last seen in And the games we would play All the times we spilled our coffees And stayed out way too late I remember the time you sat and told me About your Jesus And how not to look back Even if no one believes us When it hurts so bad Sometimes not having you here I sing

Aquarobics May Help Ease Labor

Doing aquarobics during pregnancy reduces the amount of pain-killing medication requested by women during labor, according to a Brazilian study that included 71 expectant mothers. Half the women were assigned to attend three 50-minute sessions a week of aquarobics during their pregnancy, while the other half acted as a control group. "We found no statistically significant differences in the duration of labor or they type of delivery between the two groups," study author Rosa Pereira, of the University of Campinas in Sao Paulo, said in a news release. "However, only 27 percent of women in the aquarobics group requested analgesia, compared to 65 percent in the control group. This represents a 58 percent reduction in requests." There's some debate about the wisdom of women exercising during pregnancy. The main concern is that exercise may interfere with fetal/placental demands and compromise fetal development or growth or increase the risk of abnormalities. Pereira

How to prevent Alzheimer’s disease

This artcle was made possible by By David Liu Ph.D. Alzheimer’s disease is a serious yet incurable brain disease affecting an estimated 4.5 million Americans.  A recent study suggests that taking ginkgo biloba supplements is useless in helping the elderly prevent the disease. The finding does not apply to all people at all ages although it does suggest that ginkgo may not be effective against the development and or progression of Alzheimer’s disease in people age 75 or older, at least at the dose of 120 mg a day. ginkgo has been used by many believers in natural remedies or alternative treatments and the herbal industry have said in response to the study that the finding does not undermine previous evidence suggesting that use of ginkgo supplements help Alzheimer’s patients. In any case, Dr. Steven DeKosky, dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine reported the study of 3,000 apparently healthy people age 75 or older in the Journal of the American Medical Association sayi

Bra for the boys an online bestseller in Japan

Reuters TOKYO – Who said bras are only for women? A Japanese online lingerie retailer is selling bras for cross-dressing men and they've quickly become one of its most popular items. Since launching two weeks ago on Rakuten, a major Japanese web shopping mall, the Wishroom shop has sold over 300 men's bras for 2,800 yen ($30) each. The shop also stocks men's panties, as well as lingerie for women. "I like this tight feeling. It feels good," Wishroom representative Masayuki Tsuchiya told Reuters as he modeled the bra, which can be worn discreetly under men's clothing. Wishroom Executive Director Akiko Okunomiya said she was surprised at the number of men who were looking for their inner woman. "I think more and more men are becoming interested in bras. Since we launched the men's bra, we've been getting feedback from customers saying 'wow, we'd been waiting for this for such a long time'," she said. But the bra, available in black,

Bruce Willis sues over 'green rubber' investment

LOS ANGELES – "Live Free or Die Hard" actor Bruce Willis has sued a Malaysian prince and his company over a $2 million investment in "green rubber" the actor wants returned. Prince Imran Ibni Tuanku Ja'afar and Datuk Vinod B. Sekhar, principals of environmental technology company The Petra Group, have repaid Willis $1.1 million of the original amount. But Willis said the pair have falsely claimed to have wired $900,000 they still owe him and made "specious excuses" about when it would be returned, according to the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles and made public on Friday. The actor said he was induced to invest in the recycled rubber compound because he believed former Vice President Al Gore, actor Mel Gibson and "Braveheart" director Bruce Davey had invested "substantial sums" in the company. Sekhar said Willis stood to make "a huge profit" in an initial public offering of Petra subsidiary Elastomer Technologies, which had

LOS ANGELES – R&B singer Chris Brown swept the American Music Awards on Sunday, winning three prizes including artist of the year. The 19-year-old star, famed for his on-stage athleticism, overshadowed Alicia Keys, who led the field with five nominations, and ended up with a pair of statuettes. Brown was clearly shocked when his name was announced for artist of the year, the ceremony's final award. "I probably was shocked like everybody else," Brown told reporters backstage at the Nokia Theater. "I know everybody was like, 'Huh?' I thought Coldplay should have genuinely won that award, but I'll take it!" He was also named favorite male artist in both the soul/R&B and pop/rock categories. His girlfriend, Rihanna, won those categories for the women, beating Keys in both races. Keys' awards were for her chart-topping disc, "As I Am," which was named favorite album in the soul/R&B and pop/rock categories. Behind Keys in the nomi
