Elvis Presley ranked top-earning dead celebrity

Reuters | NEW YORK - Elvis Presley may have left the building several decades ago, but his earning power is far from diminished with Forbes.com ranking him the top-earning dead celebrity for the second year in a row. Presley pulled in $52million in the past year, helped by increased visitors to his Graceland estate to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his death and new ventures like the Elvis Sirius Satellite Radio show, according to the web site. "While things might be topsy-turvy in the financial markets above ground, it's still a bull market in the boneyard," Forbes.com said. Presley earned more between October 2007and October 2008 than some of the music industry's biggest living pop stars like Justin Timberlake ($44million) and Madonna ($40 million), Forbes.com said. Coming in at No. 2with $33 million in earnings was cartoonist Charles Schulz, who died in 2000 and is best known for his "Peanuts" comic strip, while Australian actor Heath Ledger nabbed t

Bianca Roque- MYX VJ Search 2008 Winner

Bianca Roque is one of the few who actually did research on You Tube, observed VJs to get an idea on how to host and googled songs and artists on her free time. But all of this has been put to very good use. When her name was called out during the Finals Night, Bianca exclaimed, "I was shocked!!! I was called the last and the whole waiting game sort of left me hopeless already so I really couldn't believe it when they called my name." Though she was elated she won, she was also very emotional during the announcement. "I had mixed emotions when I was on stage. I was happy beyond belief for getting the job I want and sad because the search was so much fun and it had to end." This pretty gal has already started taping as an official MYX VJ and shares, "The first day is pretty intense. It's a whole league, like graduating from high school-college. Everyone is so good, it's pretty intimidating." What's more amazing is that Bianca admits that she

Chino Liu Pio- MYX VJ Search 2008 Winner

As for Chino Liu Pio, this cutie might look familiar for some. Not only did he appear in Hale's video "Kahit Pa," but he is actually Hale's biggest fan being lead singer Champ's younger brother! No wonder being in the entertainment business is in his blood. But though he loves music, he can never see himself as being in a band or performing but instead, sees himself as a messenger of music a.k.a. VJ. "I just want to perform the best way I can. And have 'Rock MYX' as my show. Haha!" Though he might look too much of a goody boy, this chinito also has a wacky side. He openly shares that he doesn't wear socks 99% of the time and just seems to be smiling 24/7. It may be his small eyes or the way his face lights up, but Chino may be one of the most happy and cheerful people you have met. He may look very confident with the way he hosts, but this guy admits that he never thought he would win. "I was a bit shocked at first but hey I'll take

Monica Yncierto- MYX VJ Search 2008 Winner

And why wouldn't she be? With her vast knowledge of the music industry, ranging from the artists to the songs itself, Monica has the right attitude and funk to rock it out on the VJ scene. "The job meant everything to me. It wasn't just something I did for the heck of it. It was a make or break for me." What sets her apart from the other finalists, besides having her hair done before auditioning, is that she can be a lot of different things. Already internalizing as a MYX VJ, Monica shares, "Expect me to be difficult to categorize. I look like 'Rock MYX,' I'm happy like 'Pop MYX,' I'm lively

Robi Domingo- MYX VJ Search 2008 Winner

Juggling both his studies and the numerous projects being lined up for him, Robi is now even conquering the VJ world! When he heard his name during the announcement at the Finals night, everyone saw how much he wanted to win. "I felt pressured that time because from now on I'll be carrying MYX's name. I told myself, 'Robi, you always have to be at your best.' But I really felt happy because I am part of the number 1 music channel in the Philippines." But don't think he'll just charm his way into your hearts with his disarming smile and puppy dog eyes (though this usually happens), Robi will also captivate you with smart conversation and a no-nonsense outlook in life. Taking everything seriously, from his studies and work, this Rico Yan look-alike even rese

Arrival Statement of former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn "jocjoc" Bolante

Arrival Statement of former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn Bolante (October 28, 2008) Many baseless accusations have been thrown against me these past years. I chose to remain silent but I've come to realize that the more I remain silent, the more vicious the accusations have become. My family and I had to endure the hardships and humiliation attendant to these accusations. Now that I am back, I assure you that I will answer any and all accusations at the proper forum. But first I shall seek a medical check-up and treatment due to mainly to the mental and physical stress and ailments brought about due to my detention in the United States. I had no intention of snubbing the Senate hearings, and I had made known to the Senate in writing the reasons for my non-appearance, that I had made prior commitments abroad which were set long before the scheduled hearings. In truth and in fact, I committed through counsel in writing to appear before the Senate during the last week of January

Scientists Develop Artificial Heart That Beats

An artificial heart that beats almost exactly like the real thing is to be implanted in patients within three years in a trial that may offer hope to heart disease sufferers unable to receive a transplant. The device, which uses electronic sensors to regulate the heart rate and blood flow, was developed by Alain Carpentier, France's leading cardiac surgeon, and engineers from the group that makes Airbus aircraft. Presented yesterday, it was described by its inventors as the closest thing yet to the human heart. If you show the graphs to a cardiac surgeon, he will say it's a human heart, Professor Carpentier said. But no, it's not a human heart, it's the prosthesis. He said that he had spent two decades on the project because I found it intolerable to see young people --aged 40, 45 or 50 --dying of massive heart attacks without having a prosthesis available to replace their hearts. The French announcement is the latest in a race by doctors to produce a device that could

New York woman gives birth to sextuplets

NEW YORK (Reuters) -A New York woman gave birth to sextuplets -- four boys and two girls --earlier this month, the Mount Sinai Medical Center said on Monday. But Digna and Victor Carpio, who also have a seven-year-old son, kept the birth as secret for three weeks as their babies fought to survive, the New York Daily News reported. The babies --identified at the moment as A, B, C, D, E and F -- were born by Caesarean section on October 6 during the 25th week of pregnancy, about three months early, each weighing between 1.5 and 2pounds (680 and 900 grams), the newspaper reported. "I've watched each of my babies fight so hard to survive," Carpio, 31, told the Daily News. "Life is beautiful and we're so thankful." The Daily News reported that the Carpio sextuplets are only the second set born in New York City. The paper said all six babies have now very good odds of survival. The couple plans to name them before they turn one-month-old. The hospital confirmed th

Wal-Mart removes brand of eggs from China stores

BEIJING - Wal-Mart said Tuesday it had stopped selling a brand of eggs in its Chinese stores after food safety regulators in Hong Kong found excessive levels of the industrial chemical melamine in eggs sold under the brand. The world's largest retailer said it has removed a brand of eggs produced by China's Dalian Hanwei Enterprise Group from all of its stores in China. "We just want to make sure the products on our shelves are safe. We will work closely with suppliers and the government and other related organizations to make further steps," Mu Mingming, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, told The Associated Press by telephone from Shenzhen. Hanwei apologized to consumers in Hong Kong on Tuesday after testers in the Chinese territory on Saturday found its eggs contained melamine, the chemical at the heart of a tainted milk scandal that has sickened tens of thousands of Chinese children. Hong Kong television station TVB reported Tuesday that the company's director Han We

Women in red drive men crazy

Reuters | A poster of the 1984 film "The Woman in Red" starring Gene Wilder and Kelly LeBrock. A new study shows that women who wear red clothing are more sexually attractive to men. WASHINGTON - If a woman wants to drive men wild, she might want to dress in red. Men rated a woman shown in photographs as more sexually attractive if she was wearing red clothing or if she was shown in an image framed by a red border rather than some other colour, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday. The study led by psychology professor Andrew Elliot of the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, seemed to confirm red as the colour of romance -- as so many Valentine's Day card makers and lipstick sellers have believed for years. Although this "red alert" may be a product of human society associating red with love for eons, it also may arise from more primitive biological roots, Elliot said. Noting the genetic similarity of humans to higher primates, he said scientists have sh

Scientists develop cancer fighting tomato

Reuters | LONDON- A purple tomato genetically engineered to contain nutrients more commonly seen in dark berries helped prevent cancer in mice, British researchers said on Sunday. The finding, published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, bolsters the idea that plants can be genetically modified to make people healthier. Cancer-prone mice fed the modified fruit lived significantly longer than animals fed a standard diet with and without regular tomatoes, Cathie Martin and colleagues at the government-funded John Innes Center in Britain reported. "The effect was much bigger than we had expected," said Martin, a plant biologist. The study focused on anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant found in berries such as blackberries and blackcurrants that have been shown to lower risk of cancer, heart disease and some neurological diseases. While an easy health boost, many people do not eat enough of these fruits, the researchers said. Using genes that help color the snapdragon flower, t

The ceremony was televised by Discovery as part of a special, exclusive program titled after the 2002 US movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," with other reporters from Japan, Germany and Argentina in tow. Vaccine slashes diarrheal illness in kids - doctors

WASHINGTON - A vaccine against rotavirus, the leading cause of diarrhea in infants, has led to a dramatic drop in hospitalization and emergency room visits since it came on the market two years ago, doctors reported Saturday. A bonus: the vaccine seems to be preventing illness even in unvaccinated children by cutting the number of infections in the community that kids can pick up and spread. "We're a little surprised by the degree of impact given the coverage we've achieved," said Jane Seward of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only about half of young children had received the vaccine and very few had received all three doses when the studies were done. Results were reported Saturday at an infectious diseases conference in Washington. Before the vaccine, more than 200,000U.S. children were taken to emergency rooms and more than 55,000 were hospitalized each year with rotavirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, mostly from January through May

Vatican suspends bishop who adopted woman

NEW DELHI - The Vatican has suspended a Roman Catholic bishop in southern India after he adopted a 26-year-old woman, a senior church official said Saturday. Bishop John Thattungal, 58, will be barred from performing any religious or administrative duties until a formal inquiry into his conduct is completed, said the Rev. Stephen Alathara, a spokesman for the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council, in a telephone interview from the southern Indian city of Kochi. Alathara said the bishop's adoption of the woman earlier this year had upset other priests in the Kochi diocese. "The majority of the priests were unhappy and asked for his resignation," he said, adding that the Vatican ordered the suspension on Thursday. He said there are questions surrounding the legality of the adoption because the woman is not a minor. Thattungal could not be reached for comment, but news reports in Kerala have quoted him as saying, "I have only fatherly love toward the woman who has spirit
