Can Yahoo! Fix the Buzz Problem?

Yahoo! Buzz Social-news sites like Digg, Mixx and Reddit promise to democratize the process of determining which news stories make popular headlines. Rather than relying on a small group of editors to decide what people should read, the sites let regular-joe readers cast their vote for worthy stories, then allow the most popular picks to bubble to the top. These sites have attracted huge followings - Digg is currently a Top 100 site with more than 20 million monthly visitors - but their dirty little secret is that their story selection process is a lot less egalitarian than it seems.Although anyone can submit articles, pictures or videos to social-news sites, it is still the sites' most active members who disproportionately influence which posts wind up on the front page. According to Qliktech's Dugg Analyzer , a Web tool that analyzes traffic on Digg , about 60 % of the stories currently deemed popular on Digg were first submitted by its 100 most active users - even though

Microsoft's Newest Browser May Block Ads

(SEATTLE ) - The next version of Microsoft Corp.'s Web browser makes it easier for people to surf the Internet without leaving a trace. Companies that sell advertisements online - including Microsoft - can electronically gather tidbits about Web surfers' habits, and then use that information to help decide what kinds of ads to show. However, in the newest "beta" test version of Microsoft's forthcoming Internet Explorer 8, which was made available Wednesday, a mode called InPrivateBrowsing lets users surf without having a list of sites they visit get stored on their computers. The program also covers other footprints, including temporary Internet files and cookies, the small data files that Web sites put on visitors' computers to track their activities. Both Internet Explorer 7 , Microsoft's current browser, and Mozilla's recently released Firefox 3, already allow users to block cookies. The top two browsers also let users delete private information suc

Computer Worm Hits the International Space Station

NASA confirmed, at a recent space operations meeting (ISS 30 P SORR), that a worm had been discovered on laptops on the International Space Station. Even if NASA has not disclosed its name, the malware in question appears to be W32.Gammima.AG and it spreads by copying itself to removable devices. The NASA officials note, however, that this is not the first time malware makes its way onto the station. The worm infected more than one laptop on the station and, while an investigation is underway to determine how the malware infected the equipment, given the spreading methods of W32.Gammima.AG , it's likely that a flash memory device is responsible for the propagation. As for the initial source of infection, there are a few possibilities. The worm could have been brought in from the surface along with the equipment, but according to NASA spokesperson Kelly Humphries, all such equipment undergoes serious scanning. "Everything is scanned before it goes up, so it's an indirect c
