Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2007

#1. Circumcision Can Prevent HIV In December 2006, the National Institutes of Health halted two clinical trials of male circumcision after an early review of the data showed that the procedure dramatically reduced transmission of HIV. Early this year, the details of those studies were published in the Lancet: In the two randomized trials, which included 7,780HIV-negative men in Rakai, Uganda, and Kisumu, Kenya, researchers found that medically circumcised men were at least 51% less likely than uncircumcised men to acquire HIV during sex with women. The editors of the Lancet called the discovery "a new era for HIV prevention." Scientists don't know yet whether male circumcision can also provide protection for female partners - a new study on the hypothesis is forthcoming next year. #2. Test for Metastatic Breast Cancer Surgeons now have a faster way to assess whether breast cancer has spread, thanks to the FDA's approval of the first molecular test to detect metastatic

Accidental fungus leads to promising cancer drug

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A drug developed using nanotechnology and a fungus that contaminated a lab experiment may be broadly effective against a range of cancers, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday. The drug, called lodamin, was improved in one of the last experiments overseen by Dr. Judah Folkman, a cancer researcher who died in January. Folkman pioneered the idea of angiogenesis therapy -- starving tumors by preventing them from growing blood supplies. Lodamin is an angiogenesis inhibitor that Folkman's team has been working to perfect for 20 years. Writing in the journal Nature Biotechnology, his colleagues say they developed a formulation that works as a pill, without side-effects. They have licensed it to SynDevRx, Inc, a privately held Cambridge, Massachusetts biotechnology company that has recruited several prominent cancer experts to its board. Tests in mice showed it worked against a range of tumors, including breast cancer, neurobl

NBC offers wide online access for Beijing Games

NEW YORK - NBC is making more than 2,200 hours of live competition from Beijing available online, giving Olympic junkies more action than they could ever devour in a day. After barely tipping its toe in the digital world during past Olympics, the network will dive into the deep end: live blogging, 3,000 hours of highlights on demand, daily recaps and analysis and even fantasy league gaming. That's in addition to the 1,400 hours of coverage planned on six television networks, more than the combined total of every previous Summer Olympics. NBC's digital plans, however, have angered media outlets that worry the company is being heavy-handed in enforcing its rights to exclusive Olympic access. The network launched NBCOlympics.com in 2000, but then it offered only still pictures and schedule information to drive viewers to its television coverage. A limited package of highlights from Athens was available in 2004, but those visiting the NBC site were required to enter a credit card n

Life for sale on eBay disappoints

PERTH, Australia - A man who auctioned his life - his house, his car, his job, even his friends - on eBay said Monday he is disappointed with the selling price: almost $384,000. Ian Usher, a British immigrant to Australia, put everything he owned as well as introductions to his friends on the online auction site after a painful breakup with his wife prompted him to want a fresh start. Bidding closed Sunday and reached nearly $384,000 - an amount Usher said his house in the western city of Perth was worth on its own. "I guess I'm a little bit disappointed at the final price, I'd hoped it to be a little higher than that," Usher told Nine Network television on Monday. "But I am committed to selling and moving on and making a fresh start." He declined to reveal the buyer's identity, or what his next step would be. Usher said he had hoped to get at least $480,000 (a half-million Australian dollars) for his life -his house and all its contents, car and a motor

North Pole may have no ice this summer: US expert

Agence France-Presse WASHINGTON - There could briefly be no ice at the North Pole this summer, a US scientist said Friday, an event that would mark a new stage in the melting of the Arctic ice sheets due to global warming. "We could have no ice at the North Pole at the end of this summer," Mark Serreze, a scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, told AFP in an interview. "And the reason here is that the North Pole area right now is covered with very thin ice and this ice we call first-year ice, the ice that tends to melt out in the summer." If the ice, albeit briefly, were to break up completely this summer it would be the first time this had happened in human history. Serreze put the chances of this occurring at 50 percent -- if it does happen, in September "it's possible" that ships could sail from Alaska right to the North Pole. Last summer, melting ice allowed ships through the Arctic's Northern Passage linking

By MJ FELIPE ABS-CBN.com Divine Diva daughter Karylle may be hosting a singing reality show from the other network, but she's getting the services of a PinoyDreamAcademy teacher to help her be at her best in singing. Karylle will star with Christian Bautista in Stages' upcoming musical West Side Story this September. Executive producer to the show Audie Gemora revealed that it took them quite a long time to complete their cast but Karylle was a perfect fit for the role of Maria. Karylle first starred as Sapphire during Trumpets' staging of The Little Mermaid, a couple of years ago, and having her back on stage for West Side Story, may need a lot of re-work and polishing with her voice and accent, especially that she's portraying a Puerto Rican in the play. In this light, Karylle did a couple of sacrifices. She confessed that she turned down a teleserye for this musical. "Well, for one thing, I already said yes to this. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Wit

Trip na Trip hosts Uma Khouny and Katkat de Castro to come up with a travel book

With the show on its third year, Trip na Trip has gone to so many places and provinces in the country that a book chronicling the sights and sounds of the Philippines seems the logical next step. From beaches to mountains to the most secluded islands, the Trip na Trip crew has been there and seen it. And now, their personal accounts of all their escapades will all be put onto paper in a still-untitled travel guide. "Mas close kami ni Katkat kaya kami ang nag-conceptualize. Nandoon din sila Jayson [Gainza] at Franzen [Fajardo] pero mas close kami ni Katkat," shares Uma. Being one of Pinoy Big Brother Season One's housemates, Uma feels that he is even luckier than Sam Milby to have landed the Trip na Trip gig. "I think ako na ang pinakamasuwerteng artista more than Sam Milby. Kasi nalilibot ko ang buong Pilipinas. Look, Israeli ako and I'm one of the few na naiikot ang Pilipinas. Three years na kami sa Trip na Trip at lahat ng butas ng Pilipinas e napasok na namin.

Victor Basa's naked pictures and videos?

Victor Basa denied he's the naked hunk whose pixelized mid-body shot is now the hot hit in the net. The gorgeous guy looks like him but he said it's not him. Victor celebrated his 23rd birthday (June 6) with the media with other Star Magic members born in June like Gretchen Fullido (June 4), Aldred Gatchalian (June 14(), Andi Eigenmann (June 23), Gemmae Custodio, Zaira dela Pena (June 10), Sophia Baars (June 12), Katrina "Hopia" Legaspi (June 13), and Arno Morales (June 14). When BuzzBox met Victor more than two years ago, he was a silent guy who calculated the person he's talking to before saying anything. Now he has evolved: He gets warmer faster, has learned the art of sharing and knows where he stands. The actor has turned workaholic, having turned himself as a MTV VJ, events host for ASAP 08, a member of Coverboys and a go-cart racer. He has clearly come out of his shell. He showed some emotion when he explained why he called PJ Valerio a gay. He courted Vale

Internet body approves domain name big bang

Agence France-Presse PARIS - Web regulators Thursday voted to allow the creation of thousands of new domain names, from.paris to.Pepsi, in one of the biggest shake-ups in Internet history, a French web official said. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the change at its annual general meeting in Paris, according to Loic Damilaville, deputy head of the French domain name body, the AFNIC. The regulator also voted to allow domain names to be lodged in languages such as Arabic or Mandarin Chinese, he said. The overhaul is expected to radically change the way users navigate the Internet. Currently all web addresses fall under one of a set number of top-level domain names. There are 240.country or.territory domains, and some 20 generic ones, from.com,.net and.org to.gov,.edu or.aero. Under the new system, the web's 1.3billion users would be able from early 2009 to buy an unlimited number of generic addresses based on common words, brands, company name

The critically acclaimed but low-rated NBC series "Friday Night Lights" also made the cut, as did the serial killer drama "Dexter," which appeared on both CBS and the cable network Showtime. Volvo to cut 8 per cent of global staff

Volvo Cars said on Wednesday it was cutting about 8 per cent of its global staff in response to soaring raw material costs and weaker sales on the US and European markets. The axing of 2,000 jobs is the largest in the history of the premium brand, owned by Ford Motor, and created a stir in Sweden, where other exporters have also been hurt by the weak dollar. Volvo said the cuts of 1,400 white-collar and 600 blue-collar staff were part of a cost-reduction programme aimed at improving its business by saving SKr4bn ($662m). The brand employs about 25,000 people worldwide. Fredrik Arp, the company's president, described it as "an unfortunate but necessary action if we are to achieve a better financial position". Volvo reported a net loss of $151m in the first quarter of this year, compared with a profit of $94m a year ago. Volvo has been hit harder than most other carmakers by the weakening of the dollar because it produces no cars in the US, unlike Japanese and Korean manufa

Mobile phone battery dead? Try dancing

Reuters LONDON - What do you do if you are stuck in a field at a pop festival but there's trouble ahead because your mobile phone's battery is about to run out? Thanks to a new gizmo, you now just need to face the music and dance. Mobile phone operator Orange said on Tuesday it had teamed up with GotWind, a firm specializing in renewable energy, to produce a recharger powered by dance energy alone. The portable kinetic energy chargers will be given a test run at this year's Glastonbury Festival, the world's biggest greenfield music and arts celebration that begins on a farm in Somerset on Friday. Orange said the prototype chargers weigh the same as a phone and are about the size of a pack of cards. Attached to the user's arm, they employ a system of weights and magnets which provide an electric current to top up charge in a storage battery. This can then later be used to recharge the phone. "We wanted to create a fun, engaging and interactive product which woul

Panasonic adds new compact, ultra-mobile

TOKYO - Panasonic's latest PC offering is small enough to cradle in one hand, yet strong enough to handle the rough and tumble of extreme environments. Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., whose Toughbook series of rugged laptops is used by U.S. police, military and utility workers, on Wednesday unveiled a compact, "ultra-mobile" version that is practically as easy to handle as a PDA but with all the features of a standard PC. And like other Toughbook models, it's made to survive. The CF-U1 mini-tablet emerged unscathed after demonstrators Wednesday dropped the device 120 centimeters (3.9 feet) face down, then dunked it in four quarts of water. Its batteries last 10 hours, in part because it runs on Intel's new, low-power Atom microprocessor. It measures 184 mm (7.2 inches) wide, 151 mm (5.9 inches) tall and 57 mm (2.2 inches) deep. Shigeo Okuda, general manager of Matsushita's marketing group, said the CF-U1 broadens the reach of rugged laptops, wh

"Over 90 percent of adults in industrialized economies typically have accounts in financial institutions compared to penetration rates as low as six percent in developing countries," BSP deputy governor Nestor Espenilla said. "In the Philippines, only 12 percent of survey respondents in small cities had bank accounts." The monetary official was referring to the BSP's consumer expectations survey. Conducted every three months, the survey is thoroughly analyzed and synthesized to help the BSP's monetary body to formulate policy plans and programs. Citing the survey's results, Espenilla said that nearly 97 percent of

Ways to be an optimist

(OPRAH.com)-- Recent research suggests an optimistic state comes from a series of active inner processes, psychological somersaults. That's good news because it means that optimism -- like other skills such as putting on eyeliner or hitting a tennis ball -- is something we can improve with practice. How you explain both success and failure can affect your outlook on life. 1. Play interpersonal ping-pong If you serve up a smile to people, they usually bounce it back. Hit them with a snarl and watch them scowl instead. Research shows that facial expressions and the moods that accompany them are contagious, probably because they evolved as a means of nonverbal communication between people. You can use the infectious effects of a grin to jump-start an optimistic outlook in yourself by sending others what you want them to lob back at you. A kind word to the man behind the deli counter can get your day bouncing in the right direction. 2. Short-circuit pessimism There's another reason

Morbid thoughts make you reach for the cookies

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Thinking about your own death can make you reach for the cookie jar, with an international study finding that morbid thoughts tend to whet the appetite. Researchers Naomi Mandel from Arizona State University and Dirk Smeesters from Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands conducted several experiments in Europe and the United States where participants wrote essays on their feelings about their own deaths. They then checked off items on a grocery list or ate cookies. Consumers who wrote about their own deaths wanted to buy more and ate more than those who wrote about a painful medical procedure. "People want to consume more of all kinds of foods, both healthy and unhealthy, when thinking about the idea that they will die some day," said the researchers in a report published in the Journal of Consumer Research. They found people with low self-esteem, in particular, tend to over-consume after death-related thoughts. Mandel and Smeesters explaine

Study shows more benefits of sunshine vitamin

LONDON (Reuters) - People with a vitamin D deficiency are as much as twice as likely to die compared to people whose blood contains higher amounts of the so- called sunshine vitamin, Austrian researchers said on Monday. Their study -- the latest to suggest a health benefit from the vitamin -- showed death rates from any cause as well as from heart-related problems varied greatly depending on vitamin D. "This is the first association study that shows vitamin D affects mortality regardless of the reason for death," said Harald Dobnig, an internist and endocrinologist at the University of Graz in Austria who led the study. The body makes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight, a reason for its nickname as the "sunshine vitamin." It is added to milk and fatty fish like salmon but many people do not get enough of it. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and is considered important for bone health. In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, and i

Online shoppers in Thailand spent the least, at 406.30 dollars over the three months, while those in Japan spent 581.00 dollars, the survey said. Shoppers in the region averaged 3.1 purchases during the period, it said. It added that 63 percent of survey respondents said they made purchases online.
